Luckhurst insists ‘lazy’ Man Utd star should be dropped as Carrick spotted moaning at him
Manchester United head coach Michael Carrick is being urged to drop Diogo Dalot from the side after committing a couple of blunders at the back against Aston Villa.
The Portuguese full-back once again started on the left side in the absence of Luke Shaw and Patrick Dorgu, with Noussair Mazraoui filling in for him on the right.
However, Dalot has been enduring a woeful afternoon at Old Trafford, as he’s been guilty of giving away two goals already.
Diogo Dalot struggling as Aston Villa run wild at Old Trafford
Man Utd endured a nightmarish start, as they found themselves trailing 0-2 after less than four minutes.
Michael Carrick’s men were surprisingly able to level the score after launching an onslaught. Bruno Fernandes converted a spot-kick won by Matheus Cunha, while Youri Tielemans scored against his former employers.
However, the second half witnessed an almost identical start, with John McGinn and Leon Goretzka restoring the visitors’ two-goal cushion.
Unfortunately for Dalot, he has been identified as the main culprit on two occasions: The 27-year-old couldn’t block Alysson’s shot on the opener, albeit Senne Lammens should have done better. Moreover, the Lisbon native gave away the penalty that resulted in Villa’s third goal after clipping his opponent.
Therefore, Man Utd journalist Samuel Luckhurst believes Dalot shouldn’t start for United after the international break.
“That is lazy from Dalot. He hasn’t even bothered to appeal,” posted The Sun’s correspondent on his X account.
“He has been starting by default for months and that run has got to end after the internationals.”
Dalot struggling at left-back?
Interestingly, Luckhurst also revealed a first-half incident involving Dalot that left Carrick moaning at his player.
The Porto youth product had also had a forgettable outing against Roma in Wednesday’s Champions League thriller.
Perhaps Dalot’s switch to the left hasn’t helped his case, but the fans had expected him to cope better given his experience. The fact he was brutally cheered off the pitch when making way for Dorgu was telling enough.
Unfortunately for Carrick, he might not have the chance to drop Dalot or any other Man Utd player, for that matter, as he might not be able survive a defeat that would leave the team in a shocking 19th place in the table.
