Liverpool Make Contact With Xabi Alonso as Arne Slot Future Hangs in the Balance

Liverpool have made contact with Xabi Alonso about succeeding Arne Slot as head coach, reports RMC Sport.
Slot is under immense pressure to salvage his job following Saturday’s disappointing 3-2 loss to Bournemouth.
Evanilson and Alex Jimenez both struck in the first half to put the Cherries in front before Virgil van Dijk halved the deficit shortly before the break.
Dominik Szoboszlai drew Liverpool level with 10 minutes to play only for Amine Adli to strike in second half injury time to inflict a seventh league defeat of the season upon the Reds.
Slot under pressure at Anfield
The result means Liverpool have failed to win in five in the league and are 14 points off league leaders Arsenal with their title defence in tatters.
And with Slot’s future in doubt, Liverpool have reportedly reached out to Alonso about the possibility of succeeding the Dutchman at Anfield.
Alonso was relieved of his duties as Real Madrid head coach earlier this month following their Supercopa de Espana loss to Barcelona.
Alonso was linked with Reds role in 2024
The former Reds midfielder was linked with the Liverpool role back in 2024 when Jurgen Klopp confirmed he’d be stepping down as head coach.
However, Alonso remained at Bayer Leverkusen before taking over the Real Madrid reins in the wake of Carlo Ancelotti’s exit last summer.
While the 44-year-old is adamant that he wants to take a break until the summer before returning to club management, a number of teams are already interested in hiring Alonso.
Liverpool face competition for former Real Madrid boss
Eintracht Frankfurt, who recently sacked Dino Toppmoller, have expressed an interest in the out-of-work head coach, while Tottenham are also believed to be interested in the former Real Madrid boss.
Spurs are facing calls to sack Thomas Frank, though a late 2-2 draw at Burnley looks to have bought the Dane time with the Tottenham head coach expected to take charge of their north London side’s Champions League meeting with Eintracht on Wednesday night.
Frank has overseen just two wins in Spurs’ last 14 league matches following Saturday’s late stalemate and have a tough run of games looming.
Tottenham face Manchester City, Manchester United, Newcastle, Arsenal and Fulham in their next five matches, and they now sit just eight points above the relegation zone.
