Liverpool vs Arsenal match preview
Liverpool are starting to build serious momentum, but this will be a serious test of their possible title credentials. On Wednesday night, Andoni Iraola's side ousted Chelsea on penalties in the EFL Cup, with Giorgi Mamardashvili pulling off a crucial save and Joe Gomez converting his spot-kick, before Wesley Fofan skied high into the Kop.
With many of the other heavyweights having been eliminated, as we will come on to, the Reds have to fancy their chances of reaching Wembley; it is Bournemouth up next. Overall, that was a fifth win in a row for Liverpool, following back-to-back Premier League victories over Brentford and then Brighton, scoring two quick-fire early goals to defeat the Seagulls last Sunday.
This has propelled Liverpool up to fifth, a mere six points below their visitors from the capital, so a victory here would surely push the Reds into title contention.
As for Arsenal, they did not enjoy the Carabao Cup quite as much this week. On Tuesday night, in one of the biggest upsets in the competition's entire history, the Gunners were dumped out by EFL League Two side Fleetwood Town on penalties. Bruno Guimarães the only man who failed to convert from 12 yards, after Max Dowman was controversially sent off late on.
In other competitions though, things are going pretty swimmingly for Mikel Arteta's team. Arsenal have won seven of eight Premier League matches, including three on the spin since a miserable visit to Brighton, most-recently swatting aside Everton last weekend; Gabriel and Ezri Konsa on target.
Nevertheless, the defending champions are still searching for that first statement victory of the season, something a win at Anfield would certainly represent. Thus, this is a massive match for both, one you will not want to miss, but who will be celebrating victory come full time on Merseyside?
Liverpool team news
Andoni Iraola confirmed in his press conference on Friday that Dominik Szoboszlai and Víctor Muñoz could be in contention to feature, after both have missed the last three matches, albeit it seems unlikely that either will start.
After rotating in the EFL Cup, Alisson, Jérémy Jacquet, Alexis Mac Allister and Alexander Isak are all set to return to the lineup. In attack, despite Rio Ngumoha's recent impressive form, as was the case against Brighton, it is set to be Bradley Barcola on the right and Cody Gakpo over on the opposite flank.
Arsenal team news
Arsenal's appeal against Max Dowman's suspension was unsuccessful, so the 16 year old is banned, while Mikel Arteta is also without Willia Saliba and Bukayo Saka. In a massive boost though, Christos Tzolis is back in the squad, after suffering a hamstring injury on international duty.
None of Noni Madueke, Declan Rice, Gabriel nor Riccardo Calafiori even travelled to Lancarshire in mid-week, but will return here, with Kai Havertz chosen over Viktor Gyökeres in attack. Lastly, Jurriën Timber's added defensive solidity is likely to see him chosen over Benjamin White at right-back.
Predicted Line-ups
Liverpool predicted lineup: Alisson; Araújo, Jacquet, van Dijk, Kerkez; Gravenberch, Mac Allister, Wirtz; Barcola, Isak, Gakpo.
Arsenal predicted lineup: Raya; Timber, Konsa, Gabriel, Calafiori; Rice, Guimarães, Ødegaard; Madueke, Eze, Havertz.
Score prediction: Liverpool 1-1 Arsenal.
