Liverpool have reportedly started initial talks for the biggest signing of 2027. This will be the talk of the transfer window.

Liverpool made absolutely no waves in the 2024 transfer windows. Zero waves. They did, essentially, nothing at all.

Now didn't that change in 2025? Liverpool went on to break their transfer record twice in that summer, including the overall British transfer record as they signed Alexander Isak from Newcastle United.

Even more money went out in 2026. Liverpool signed Jeremy Jacquet, Victor Munoz and Bradley Barcola for well over £200m as the squad revamp continued at pace.

All eyes now turn to 2027 as we wait and see what Liverpool do. There's, in theory, less of a need for big signings after the last couple of years, while the Reds have a new sporting director in Julian Ward who, historically anyway, does things differently.

And yet, they may actually be moving towards the most notable signing of 2027.

Trent Alexander-Arnold to Liverpool

Cadena SER reports that Liverpool have been in contact about a possible January move for Trent Alexander-Arnold. The Scouser is now third choice right-back at Real Madrid and it’s believed they’d be willing to do some sort of deal this winter.

However, it would likely be a loan deal with things potentially moving forward from there.

And it’s one that makes sense. Real Madrid aren’t playing him, Alexander-Arnold needs to play, and Liverpool do not have a right-back they’re happy with. If not for the obvious history, this would be an incredibly suitable deal for all parties that would naturally be explored.

But there is that history. Alexander-Arnold did not leave on good terms and going back to Anfield would be admitting defeat, essentially. It’ll even feel like that from the Liverpool point of view - an admittance that they couldn’t find a right-back to replace him.

The thing is, though, both angles are true. Liverpool have not found a right-back to replace him and were never going to. Alexander-Arnold has failed at Real Madrid and looks increasingly unlikely to break through there.

So for both parties, this all makes sense. Again, if not for the history, Liverpool would be all over such a deal and we imagine Alexander-Arnold would be, too.

This would be one of the biggest and most notable transfers of 2027. Maybe even the biggest, such was Alexander-Arnold’s level at Liverpool. The return of one of the world’s best.

But it’s still difficult to believe.
