Liverpool reach shock transfer decision on their best player
Liverpool have made a controversial decision on the future of Alexis Mac Allister, who has arguably been the club's most consistent performer this season.
The Argentina international has been in the headlines a lot in recent months. After reaching a second World Cup final with his country, Mac Allister found himself embroiled in transfer speculation throughout the summer.
The 27-year-old was being linked with Real Madrid and even Liverpool's Manchester rivals, Man Utd and Man City, who were both in the process of revamping their respective midfields. Mac Allister was reportedly offered to potential suitors.
Ultimately, the former Brighton man stayed put - but not without dropping a bombshell. Mac Allister openly admitted that he was "very, very sad" at not having been offered a new contract, which explains why he was being shopped around in the summer.
While midfield partners Dominik Szoboszlai and Ryan Gravenberch have received lucrative extensions, the Argentine is still playing on the deal he signed when he arrived for €42 million in 2023. That contract will expire in 2028.
Mac Allister decision made
Liverpool have thus far refrained from opening talks with the 27-year-old over fresh terms, and according to Ben Jacobs, they have no plans of doing so, at least not for the time being.
"With Alexis Mac Allister, the aim is, as of now anyway, not to offer him a new deal. Mac Allister said he's disappointed in that, but Liverpool will be looking for at least one midfielder in 2027," Jacobs explained on the Market Madness podcast.
The club are seemingly content to see out the season with Mac Allister on his existing contract, despite the fact that he will only have 12 months left next summer. It is therefore not far-fetched to suggest that the midfielder could leave next year.
This would be quite controversial considering his newfound importance to the team. Mac Allister mightily struggled to hit his usual levels last season, but he has been given a new lease on life under Andoni Iraola.
The Argentine has probably been Liverpool's best and most consistent player in recent weeks, alongside new signing Jeremy Jacquet, scoring important goals in the Champions League and Carabao Cup.
Liverpool are firmly planning to sign a new midfielder in 2027, and it seems that they might even be willing to sacrifice Mac Allister to make it happen. In any case, there will be at least one new face in the Anfield club's engine room next year.
There have been links with Lamine Camara of AS Monaco, AS Roma star Manu Kone and Bournemouth sensation Alex Scott. The latter two are also key targets for Chelsea, which is why reports suggest that Camara could be the most realistic new signing.
The Senegal international was close to joining Chelsea on Deadline Day, but Monaco pulled the plug at the last minute. This damaged the relationship between the two clubs and will allow Liverpool to potentially have a free run at Camara.
However, they won't get the same discount Chelsea thought they were getting when they struck a €55m deal. Monaco, who are optimistic that they will have resolved their financial issues by the time Camara is sold, insist that the 22-year-old is at a minimum worth €70m.
