Liverpool now prepared to green light midfielder, should agree deal ASAP
Liverpool are in position otherwise green light a new midfielder deal. It really should happen as soon as possible.
Liverpool have got to sort out their midfield and they've got to do it soon. The Reds are struggling to find balance this season and while that's true for a few positions, it's particularly noticeable in the middle.
Things have reached the point where Trey Nyoni is now essentially a preferred option in midfield despite having barely played senior football ahead of this campaign. And that's after paying enormous money to sign Ryan Gravenberch and Dominik Szoboszlai to long-term contracts.
Neither get in the starting XI as things stand. Instead, Nyoni is needed as he's essentially the only reliable holding midfielder in the squad, which goes against the very reasons for giving out those bumper contracts in the first place.
And then there's whatever's going on with Alexis Mac Allister.
Alexis Mac Allister's contract situation
Mac Allister made absolutely no secret of his desire to sign a new contract in the summer. He was publicly disappointed that Liverpool didn't offer him one, supposedly telling the player that they weren't in a position to do so.
That's despite both Gravenberch and Szoboszlai getting deals. Now we fast-forward to three months into the season and Mac Allister is unquestionably outperforming both. He's the fixture in the team while the other two hope to win his place.
So how does that change the situation? Well, up to now it doesn't. Mac Allister still doesn't have a new contract and is still publicly letting everyone know that he wants one.
He told Gaston Edul that he hopes things might change with a new sporting director. It remains to be seen if that's the case but the Athletic claim that there is a potential green light here.
Liverpool are happy to give Mac Allister a new contract, potentially, if his form continues. We're not entirely sure why he has the requirement and neither of his midfield teammates did, but that's by the by.
The important thing is that Liverpool are supposedly a little more open to a new deal than they were in the summer. That will hopefully be enough to get things sorted ASAP as there's no real doubt that Mac Allister has been a standout for the club this season.
The idea of letting him go while worse-performing players remain for the long-term is insane. Get the deal signed now.
