Florian Wirtz's time at Liverpool has been a bit of a rollercoaster.

The midfielder was brought to Anfield for £116 million last summer and, while everyone thought that he'd become the Reds' creative spark, he's been far from that.

Indeed, he did manage to chip in with 10 assists across all competitions last term but, that's still not enough for Liverpool to get back to the top of the Premier League table.

This season, fans were hoping that things would be different and, even though Andoni Iraola has used him in his favoured position, he's still failed to meet expectations.

All sorts of rumours have emerged because of his lack of form but now, the Reds may have stumbled upon the solution to their problem.

Harvey Elliott could become Liverpool's new Florian Wirtz

Harvey Elliott is one of many Liverpool players who fans wanted things to work out for.

When Jurgen Klopp was at the helm, the Englishman was often one of the first names on his team sheet and was genuinely one of their best performers with some even calling him a wonderkid.

However, for one reason or another, Arne Slot didn't see that in Elliott which led to him spending a season bench-warming and then, the year after that, he was moved on to Aston Villa.

Most fans thought that would mark the end of Elliott's Liverpool career but, again, Unai Emery didn't see what he wanted in the midfielder and chose against signing him permanently.

This led to him returning to Anfield and being shipped out on loan to Valencia this season.

But, according to an update from Football Insider, the La Liga outfit are already having doubts about the deal.

"Liverpool intend to sell midfielder Harvey Elliott in January if Valencia terminate his loan spell, sources have told Football Insider," they wrote.

"The La Liga side are searching for a way to bring the loan deal to a premature close, with the 23-year-old still yet to start a game for them.

"There is a growing expectation that he will be sent back to Anfield in January, which sources say would effectively set him back to 'square one.'"

Harvey Elliott is Liverpool's best back-up option for Florian Wirtz

With the way that Liverpool's squad has been planned this season, there isn't really a natural back-up for Wirtz.

Indeed, Dominik Szoboszlai and James McConnell can both be used there if needed but, if the German ends up injured, the Reds won't have that many options to choose from.

So, should Elliott's loan end up being terminated, giving the 23-year-old another chance to prove his worth could be the best course of action.

Because, not only is he homegrown but, during the 2025-26 summer, he won the Under-21 Euros with England and proved that he could be the star of a team if given the chance.

Obviously, there's no knowing what could happen but, of all the options that Liverpool have, Elliott seems to be the best bet.
