Liverpool have dodged a transfer bullet with one smart decision
Over the last few transfer windows, it feels like almost every single player in the world has been linked with a Liverpool move.
It was clear after their fifth-place finish last term that some major changes needed to be made.
And, even before then, after their title-winning season, some of the Reds' first-team squad were getting a bit older and were failing to perform as well.
These observations resulted in the Reds spending well over £600 million across the last couple of years with some fans still thinking that more change is needed.
And, while a lot of the players linked with Liverpool would have certainly improved things, there is one transfer that they missed out on which, looking back, may have been for the best.
Liverpool dodged a bullet by not signing Marc Guehi last season
Last season, one of the biggest-named players that Liverpool missed out on signing was Marc Guehi.
The centre-back was on his way out of Crystal Palace with his contract set to expire at the end of the season.
An agreement was reached for the transfer of the Englishman at the end of the summer transfer window but, since the Eagles couldn't find a replacement in time, they pulled out of the deal.
This left Liverpool a tad short at the back with the club even attempting to try and sign him again in January.
In the end, Manchester City were obviously the ones who ended up with him among their ranks and, for a while, he looked like an exceptional addition.
But, recently, his performance levels have dropped drastically with the 26-year-old even being at the centre of a few mistakes, especially in City's recent 2-1 defeat against Aston Villa.
So, even though Liverpool missed out on him they eventually brought Jeremy Jacquet in as a different option to Guehi.
And, this season, it feels like they dodged a massive bullet by not bringing Guehi in, especially with how well Jacquet is performing.
Jeremy Jacquet could easily become Liverpool's best defender in the future
At the moment, it's clear that Virgil van Dijk is still Liverpool's best defender.
Despite being 35 years old, the centre-back is still managing to hold his own and, even though there have been a couple of occasions when he's made errors that have led to goals, the good has outweighed the bad.
However, the only problem that Liverpool have at the moment is that his contract is set to expire at the end of the current season.
And, even though a new deal could be offered to the defender, it's still unclear whether Iraola and Julian Ward want to do that.
But, once the Dutchman does eventually exit, the role of being Liverpool's best centre-back will be up for grabs and, if Jacquet continues on this path of progression, he could easily fill that void.
Obviously, there's still way more than half of the season left to go so things can change but, right now, it certainly feels like the Reds managed to dodge a bullet by not signing Guehi and bringing Jacquet in instead.
