Liverpool force club into major decision, they were ready to pounce

Liverpool have cast their net far and wide for new players over the last couple of years.

In fact, over £600 million has been spent by the Anfield outfit on trying to improve their ranks and, while they've managed to do this with some players, others haven't quite hit the mark.

Even if every single player was performing to a high standard, there would always be ways to improve.

At the moment, it's clear that there are several problem positions among Liverpool's ranks that need to be bolstered.

And, even with the transfer window closed, the links haven't slowed down with new players being linked with an Anfield switch on a weekly basis.

No concrete deals have come to fruition yet but, the fact that Liverpool are being linked with so many players is definitely a good sign.

Liverpool were ready to activate David Otorbi's release clause which forced Valencia into extending his contract

One position that Liverpool didn't manage to strengthen in the summer was right-wing.

Mohamed Salah exited and, from that point on, everyone thought that a new right-winger would be on top of Liverpool's priority list.

Evidently, that wasn't the case and, although Victor Munoz and Bradley Barcola were brought in, neither of them are natural right-wingers.

Both players can be used there if needed but, in reality, everyone knows that the Reds would've been better off signing a proepr right-winger.

Attempts to sign one were made by Liverpool but, nothing ever came of it.

However, as per a fresh update from Tribuna Deportiva, Julian Ward was about to change that and activate the release clause of Valencia right-winger, David Otorbi.

"Liverpool informed VCF and the player’s entourage this week that they wanted to PAY THE CLAUSE of David Otrobi of 30M," they wrote.

"VCF moves quickly from that moment and executes the +3 of the contract and raises the clause to 60M."

Liverpool could have got their hands on an elite talent in David Otorbi

Otorbi probably isn't a player that many Liverpool fans will have heard of.

The 19-year-old currently plays for Valencia and has been a regular feature in their team since the start of the 2026-27 season.

Statistically, his numbers aren't the most impressive with the attacker only scoring one goal this term.

But, the fact that he's a natural right winger who can also be used as a left-winger or a striker is massively beneficial.

He's also only 19 years old so, even though he's already a fairly impressive player, there's plenty of room for him to grow into an even better one.

For the €30 million that Liverpool wanted him for, Otorbi would have been an absolute steal but, now Valencia are likely to extend his contract and bump his release clause up to €60 million, the deal doesn't really represent good value anymore.

However, it does show that the Reds are still on the lookout for a new right-winger, which should be music to the ears of fans.
