Liverpool await news on Jeremy Jacquet hamstring strain ahead of Manchester City clash
Liverpool are waiting to discover the extent of Jeremy Jacquet's hamstring problem after the centre-back was left out of France's Nations League win over Belgium.
The 21-year-old had played France's previous two matches, his first for the senior team, but was omitted from Zinedine Zidane's squad for Monday's 4-1 victory. talkSPORT first reported that the defender had been left out after picking up a hamstring strain.
The news is a blow for Liverpool, with Jacquet having made an impressive start at Anfield this season. The Frenchman has started all five Premier League games for the Reds, while Liverpool face Manchester City in a massive fixture at Anfield on Sunday.
A statement from the French Football Federation said Jacquet had sustained a "strain to his left hamstring." Speaking in his post-match press conference, Zidane described the defender as "slightly injured."
Head coach Andoni Iraola does have cover, with on-loan Barcelona defender Ronald Araújo and Joe Gomez available. However, losing Jacquet for Sunday's visit of City would be a significant blow.
Attacking injuries add to Liverpool issues
The Reds are also sweating over forwards Alexander Isak and Cody Gakpo, whose international duty with Sweden and the Netherlands respectively was cut short.
Isak was sent home after just one match with a minor thigh problem, while Gakpo is considered more of a concern after injuring his ankle.
Without both, Iraola would be short of options up front. Summer signing Bradley Barcola could be pressed into a central role despite being more comfortable out wide, while Florian Wirtz could be pushed further forward from his number 10 position.
City arrive at Anfield for their first match since an independent commission found the club guilty of the vast majority of charges relating to financial breaches.
