Thomas Tuchel named his England squad for the upcoming friendly meetings with Uruguay and Japan on Friday. There were first call-ups for Lewis Hall and James Garner of Newcastle and Everton, respectively.

Strikers Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Dominic Solanke also returned to the international setup. Manchester United pair Harry Maguire and Kobbie Mainoo are also back in the England squad. For the latter duo, international recognition is warranted.

Both Maguire and Mainoo have been instrumental in United’s rise up the Premier League table following Michael Carrick’s return to the Old Trafford dugout. Carrick succeeded Ruben Amorim in January and has got their Champions League pursuit back on track. Indeed, had the season started when the former midfielder took over the United reins, they’d be top of the Premier League table.

Mainoo's United resurgence

The resurgence of the duo has been vital to United’s upturn in fortunes. Mainoo in particular has enjoyed a whirlwind start to 2026. It certainly beats his end to 2025.

Mainoo was on the cusp of an Old Trafford exit at the turn of the year. Ostracised by former boss Amorim, the midfielder found playing time incredibly hard to come by. It wasn’t a surprise that Mainoo pushed to secure a move away from United last summer, only to find his request to leave rebuffed by the powers that be.

And a January exit was mooted. Napoli was a possible destination for the 20-year-old with the Italian side prepared to sign Mainoo on loan for the second half of the season. Amorim’s exit and Carrick’s subsequent appointment, however, completely changed Mainoo’s fortunes for the better.

Now, he’s one of the first names on the team sheet. Carrick’s decision to abandon the three-man backline and revert to a 4-2-3-1 system has benefited both Mainoo and United. Tuchel uses the same formation for England. Mainoo has the experience in the setup that’ll serve him in good stead.

Tuchel's midfield options

Few gave Mainoo a chance of returning to the international stage prior to the World Cup. Despite his flying form for club, Tuchel is well stocked in the middle of the park, particularly at the base of the midfield. Declan Rice and Elliot Anderson are the German’s go-to pairing. Adam Wharton and Jordan Henderson are further options for the England boss.

Mainoo brings that directness to the side that you’d expect from a number eight, however. The United man is averaging one successful dribble per 90 in the Premier League this season. 1.4 key passes per 90 is also a solid haul. Mainoo is able to break the lines with his close-control and play the pass required to pry apart a backline.

Off the ball, too, Mainoo has been shining. A return of 2.2 tackles per 90 proves he carries his defensive responsibilities with aplomb. He’s been combining his midfield duties superbly, and this has had a positive impact on his midfield teammates.

Casemiro has the safety net required to push forward and support the offensive, while captain Bruno Fernandes has the freedom to do what he does best.

The Portugal star has made at least 40 more key passes (98) than any other player in the Premier League this season. 16 assists is far and away the most in the division. Half of those assists have come since Mainoo came back into Carrick’s thinking.

Mainoo warrants England return

There will be other mitigating factors behind Fernandes’ flying form, but Mainoo’s return to the starting line up cannot be overstated. And it’s been duly rewarded with a return to the England squad.

While Tuchel in all likelihood has his immediate squad in mind for the World Cup, Mainoo’s renaissance gives the England boss food for thought. Mainoo is a spanner in the works, and in a good way.

He’ll hope to celebrate his recall with another fine showing when United face Bournemouth on Friday night. It’s a real chance to prove he justifies his England call up, and potentially force his way back in Tuchel’s plans for the World Cup.
