Just in: Sky Sports confirms Man Utd have ruled out one post-Carrick option
Manchester United will be looking for a long-term option should they decide to part ways with Michael Carrick in the coming days or weeks.
The 45-year-old started out as an interim coach when he was brought in to replace Ruben Amorim in January.
The club legend’s arrival immediately paid dividends, with MUFC securing shocking wins over Man City and Arsenal. The positive run continued until the end of the season, and a comfortable third-place finish was enough to secure Carrick a permanent role.
Man Utd would only replace Michael Carrick with a permanent coach
Unfortunately for Man Utd, the decision to turn Carrick from caretaker to permanent boss has backfired, with the club enduring a woeful start to the season.
A nine-match winless run was only interrupted by a sensational come-from-behind victory over Roma in Tuesday’s Champions League action. Nevertheless, the team is still lying in an appalling 17th place in the Premier League table, with only one win in nine games.
Therefore, Carrick is still running on thin ice. In fact, many fans and observers were left shocked by the management’s decision to confirm him following the heavy back-to-back defeats to Como and Bournemouth.
But according to Sky Sports News reporter Rob Dorsett, United don’t intend to replicate last season’s experience by appointing another interim head coach.
Hence, if Man Utd decide to part ways with Carrick in the middle of the campaign, he will be replaced by a new permanent manager.
A wise decision from INEOS?
At this stage, it feels like the Man Utd directors are learning as they go, so they’re trying to avoid repeating decisions they made in similar situations in the past that, in hindsight, proved poor calls.
This season, Carrick has often struggled to find tactical solutions, whether during the game or between matches. Nevertheless, the locker room remains largely behind him, as is the fanbase.
Therefore, bringing in an interim manager makes little sense at the moment, as it won’t guarantee better results or a positive response from the players.
Perhaps this is why Carrick has managed to survive thus far, as INEOS may have been waiting for the opportunity to strike a deal with a new permanent manager.
Eddie Howe has been the odds-on favourite for weeks ahead of Julian Nagelsmann and Antonio Conte. On the other hand, Unai Emery is a popular profile among the MUFC directors, but for him to leave Aston Villa in the middle of the campaign is virtually impossible.
