Real Madrid are reportedly confident of signing Manchester United academy forward JJ Gabriel, but the 16-year-old has yet to decide his future and no agreement has been confirmed.

The update, reported by The Peoples Person on Sunday 11 October, comes as the Reds try to keep hold of a prospect whose next move remains unresolved. Gabriel had requested to leave Manchester United, but that does not amount to a completed departure.

Madrid are waiting for Gabriel’s decision

José Félix Díaz reported via Diario AS on Instagram that Madrid believe they can secure Gabriel’s signature and are waiting for his final decision. The report points to a shift in momentum towards the Spanish club, not confirmation that terms have been agreed with the player or United.

Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain are also monitoring developments, according to The Peoples Person. Madrid may be the reported frontrunner, but the available reporting does not establish that any rival has reached an agreement.

United’s scholarship offer changes the picture

Gabriel had been nearing a potential senior debut before requesting cancellation of his registration, according to The Peoples Person. The Guardian, as cited by the outlet, reported that United have made him an official scholarship contract offer.

That offer matters to United’s negotiating position. The Peoples Person reported that, without it, Gabriel was believed able to leave for a rival club for nothing in January; after the offer, a Premier League side would need to negotiate a fee with United, with a tribunal able to determine compensation if the clubs cannot agree.

Gabriel is reportedly inclined towards a move to Europe, where compensation would be significantly lower. The scholarship offer and the possible difference between a domestic and overseas move leave United facing a complicated route to retaining him.

Move date remains unclear

Gabriel is contracted to United until the end of the season, and The Peoples Person said it is unclear when he could move to Madrid. His camp had been thought to want first-team appearances at Old Trafford as soon as possible before pursuing an exit, adding another unresolved factor to a decision Madrid are waiting on.
