Jeremie Frimpong's seven-minute heartbreak sums up a frustrating Liverpool career so far
Leaving the Gtech Community Stadium with three Premier League points in the bag ought to feel like a triumph. A 2-1 comeback victory, completed by Alexander Isak’s coolly dispatched winner, showed genuine character from an energetic Liverpool side down in West London.
Yet, as traveling Kopites trudged away from the away end, the overriding sentiment wasn't pure celebration it was a deep, familiar anxiety.
For all the drama of overturned penalties and two red cards for Keith Andrews’ Bees, the real story of Saturday afternoon unfolded on the sidelines.
Having already seen Dominik Szoboszlai pull up off the ball in the first half, Liverpool suffered a second, almost surreal injury blow when substitute Jeremie Frimpong limped off just seven minutes into his second-half introduction.
Andoni Iraola’s post-match comments offered little comfort. The Reds manager confirmed that both key figures are set for extended spells on the treatment table, casting a dark cloud over an otherwise heroic 2-1 win.
The Frimpong dilemma
When Brentford midfielder Yehor Yarmolyuk was shown a straight red card for headbutting Jeremy Jacquet right before the interval, Iraola sensed an opportunity to go for the kill.
At half-time, he withdrew Ronald Araujo in favour of Jeremie Frimpong a purely tactical adjustment aimed at exploiting the extra space on the right wing.
It made complete tactical sense on paper. Coming off an electric midweek display in Linz where he scored and assisted in a 6-3 Champions League win over LASK, Frimpong looked primed to destabilise Brentford’s defensive block.
Instead, the decision transformed into a nightmare. Just seven minutes after play resumed, the Dutch international pulled up off the ball. He clutched at his leg in distress and signaled to the bench before limping toward the tunnel to be replaced by 17-year-old Rio Ngumoha.
The substitution triggered total tactical reshuffling. With Araujo already off, Conor Bradley long-term absent with a knee issue, and Szoboszlai sidelined in the first half, Iraola was forced to deploy winger Víctor Muñoz at right-back.
To Muñoz's absolute credit, he handled the emergency duty brilliantly, cutting inside to score Liverpool's equaliser before steadying the defensive flank
Iraola addresses the press
Speaking in his post-match press conference, Iraola pulled no punches regarding the fitness situations of both players, admitting the demanding turnaround from midweek European action left his squad in a delicate position:
"They were different cases. Dom felt the same injury, it's not a new injury and was probably not healed enough, so we will need more time with him. Jeremie's was new, I think he finished cramping the other day [against LASK]."
"I put him on because playing against 10, going forward I thought he could give us more than Ronald. After, I value a lot and he was very good, Victor [Muñoz] playing as a right-back. But it will mean we will lose Dom and Jeremie for some time, yes."
"I think we have a very delicate situation. We were coming from playing Champions League away two days ago, we arrived [home] late at night and probably with not a proper recovery. You are in doubt between the players that have already started two games and are very tired, or the players that are recovering from injuries but you're probably not 100 per cent certain."
Frimpong’s Anfield injury record
For Frimpong, this fleeting cameo represents another deeply disheartening chapter since his high-profile arrival from Bayer Leverkusen in the summer of 2025.
Having established himself as a Bundesliga Invincible with 74 goal involvements in 190 matches in Germany, big things were expected from the wing-back. Yet, his Anfield tenure has been severely disrupted by fitness setbacks:
2025–26 Absence: Missed 26 matches across all competitions due to four separate hamstring issues between August and February.
14-Match Absence: Spent two whole months on the sidelines between October and December 2025.
International Impact: His injury-riddled debut campaign cost him a spot in the Netherlands' World Cup 2026 squad, and despite being called up for October's Nations League fixtures, he failed to play a single minute.
Liverpool Output: Managed just three goals and four assists across 43 appearances, losing his regular Premier League starting place to Barcelona loanee Ronald Araujo in September.
s Liverpool prepare for a grueling run of fixtures featuring Villarreal in the Champions League, Brighton in the Premier League, and Chelsea in the EFL Cup, Iraola faces a sudden selection headache on the right side of his setup.
With Conor Bradley sidelined until December and Frimpong set for another stint in the medical room, Joe Gomez stands as Liverpool's primary natural senior option at right-back, alongside Araujo. Alternatively, Víctor Muñoz’s heroic, versatile shift at the Gtech showed that Iraola has emergency solutions when required.
Winning at Brentford after conceding first is a test of resilience that Liverpool haven't passed in nearly three years. But as Iraola prepares his squad for Tuesday night under the Anfield lights, he must navigate an autumn fixture list with his squad depth tested to its absolute limits.
