Manchester United have reportedly been informed that Antonio Conte is ready to take charge should they decide to sack Michael Carrick.

After a woeful start to the campaign, Carrick is already finding himself under massive pressure, with conflicting reports about his position.

The Red Devils currently sit 13th in the Premier League standings, having picked up a single win from six games. They have also crashed out of the Carabao Cup after squandering a two-goal lead against Brighton, and in their most recent outing, they were beaten by Atletico Madrid in their first away Champions League fixture.

Luckily for Carrick, his defender Lisandro Martinez rose to his defence after the defeat in the Spanish capital, as he pointed the finger towards the top management, who failed to properly back the head coach on the market.

The Argentine’s epic post-match rant deflected attention away from Carrick’s future. However, another one or two poor results could spark the end of the 45-year-old’s reign at Old Trafford.

Over the past few weeks, Conte emerged as one of the main candidates to replace Carrick at Carrington.

The currently unattachedConte stirred the pot himself last week by revealing his desire to reinvigorate a fallen European giant in his next job, albeit without naming any.

In his latest appearance on The United Stand, British journalist Ben Jacobs reveals that members of the Italian manager’s entourage have told Man Utd officials that the 57-year-old would be ‘open’ to discussion.

However, the source insists that the Premier League giants have yet to make any offers for the former Juventus and Chelsea boss, as they continue to support Carrick.

In the aftermath of Lisandro’s bombshell, INEOS must tread carefully on the coaching front, as sacking Carrick could further antagonise an already irritated fanbase.

Nevertheless, if Man Utd officials firmly believe that Carrick’s departure is inevitable, they must get their next move right.

While many would like to see Julian Nagelsmann at Carrington, a proven winner like Conte would probably fare better at this delicate stage.

The Italian tactician, whom Pep Guardiola described as an ‘outstanding ‘ manager, can take the best out of his players, as his track record shows.

Therefore, United might be wise to keep the dialogue with Conte open so they would have a clear path forward in case a vacancy opens up in the coming weeks or months.
