‘It’s a disgrace’: Carragher pulls no punches after what he heard from Man Utd star post-Como defeat
Jamie Carragher thinks it was disgraceful for Bruno Fernandes to openly question Michael Carrick’s tactics after last night’s defeat.
Manchester United slumped to a 4-1 defeat away to Cesc Fabregas’ Como, who are navigating their first-ever campaign in the Champions League.
What happened with Bruno Fernandes last night?
In the aftermath of yet another calamitous display, Fernandes told reporters: “It’s a decision from the staff to not press man-to-man and sometimes leave space behind and try to get the ball, wait for them, but sometimes when you give space to these teams they get confidence.
Further pressed on whether he believed Carrick got said tactics wrong, he responded: “That’s on the manager and staff to see, not me. Sometimes you have to be more brave under pressure, take the risk of pressing high and making them uncomfortable.”
The skipper was hooked from the action when United were trailing by three goals in the 66th minute, and cut a frustrated figure as he made his way to the bench.
However, his replacement, Joshua Zirkzee, went on to score United’s only goal of the night, albeit it was only as consolation as it came in injury time to make it 4-1.
Fernandes is now on a run of seven consecutive games without a goal contribution, so you’d imagine he’s also feeling the heat due to the standards he’s previously set.
Carragher hits out at Fernandes
Reacting to the 32-year-old’s critical assessment of how the side were told to set up, Carragher said on CBS Sports: “For Bruno Fernandes to do that, it’s a disgrace.
“When you think about last season, he got Player of the Year. That was on the back of Michael Carrick becoming the manager. He wouldn’t have got that award without Carrick.
“Carrick put him back in his rightful position. And he then went on to have a fantastic season because he’s a talented footballer.
“When you think of him as a footballer, he’s a talent. But in terms of attitude and the way he goes about things, it’s not right at all. And he’s reacted like that because he’s been brought off.”
