Manchester United forward Matheus Cunha urged the home supporters to get on their side in their clash against Tottenham, but it sparked a negative reaction from the crowd.

After a three-week international break, the Red Devils resumed their campaign by hosting Spurs at Old Trafford.

But while the North Londoners are lying rock bottom in the Premier League table, they still dominated the action in the first half. In fact, Michael Carrick’s men were lucky not to concede in the first 45 minutes as two big chances for Dominic Solanke and Mohammed Kudus went begging.

With Michael Carrick’s men being outplayed and outrun by their visitors, the home crowd grew increasingly frustrated, with jeers and whistles growing louder with every poor pass or lost possession.

Therefore, Cunha tried to evoke a more positive reaction by telling the fans to show their support for the team.

However, not only was the Brazilian shunned, but he was reprimanded by the angry mob, who basically told him to do his part first.

The Athletic’s correspondent Laurie Whitwell describes the scene as follows:

“Spurs have had 170 accurate passes to United’s 70. All one way traffic so far, with Old Trafford getting edgy + restless,” posted the journalist on his X (formerly Twitter) account.

“Cunha, irritated, tried to provoke some noise from the crowd but the response from fans nearby was mainly about him needing do the business first.”

At this stage, one has to feel for Cunha, who works his socks off every time he plays. The former Wolves star constantly tracked back to support Luke Shaw in his unpleasant task against Kudus, and he seemed to be one of the few Man Utd players hell-bent on producing something.

However, football is a team sport, and the Brazilian should have known better than to get on the nerves of an already-stressed large band of supporters, who have been watching the players underperform since the start of the season.

With the first half ending goalless, we can only hope that United produce a significantly better second period and come away with a positive result that would cheer up their fans.
