Insider reveals Man Utd pursuit of 'one of the best defenders'
A "confidant" of Fulham defender Calvin Bassey has claimed that Manchester United have been monitoring the Nigeria international for some time.
The 26-year-old has become the subject of transfer speculation in recent days, with the Red Devils apparently keen to sign him in 2027. Bassey is entering his prime and approaching the end of his Fulham contract, making him an incredibly attractive player on the market.
When the centre-back initially joined the Cottagers from Ajax in 2023, Bassey often looked clumsy and error-prone, but that has significantly changed in recent seasons. The 47-cap Nigeria star has become a reliable presence at the heart of the defence.
It is therefore unsurprising that clubs like Man Utd have come calling. The Red Devils are looking to revamp their backline in 2027 and will sign at least one new central defender to replace the outgoing Lisandro Martinez.
Getting Bassey won't necessarily be straightforward, however. Although his Fulham deal is up at the end of the season, the club hold a one-year extension option in addition to wanting to hand him a completely new contract.
Man Utd's Bassey interest isn't new
Speaking to Footy-Africa, a "confidant" of Bassey, who is said to work with the Nigerian federation and the national team, revealed that Man Utd have been tracking the 26-year-old for some time.
"The interest in Bassey has been there since last season, when in my opinion he became one of the best defenders in the Premier League," the source explained. "He is big, strong, very physical and has leadership attributes, which have seen him lead Fulham this season wearing the armband.
"It is no surprise Manchester United want to sign him, and they are not the only team. But when I spoke to him, he did not deny nor confirm the news. He has one year left on his deal and at 26, he is in his prime. I think a lot of talks will happen at the end of the season, but the player has decided not to confirm or deny it."
