It’s fair to say Liverpool fans are still waiting to see Florian Wirtz at his consistent best.

The 23-year-old joined the Reds back in summer 2025 from Bayer Leverkusen with a reputation as one of the finest playmakers in world football.

Having a year earlier led Xabi Alonso’s side to an unbeaten league and cup double Wirtz was on the wishlist of several top European clubs.

Manchester City and Real Madrid were both intent on signing the Germany international - who was also naturally on the radar for Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich.

Wirtz flatters to deceive

Arne Slot and Richard Hughes convinced the No7 that his future lay at Anfield with a deal struck with B04 for a new British record fee.

The defending Premier League champions agreed to pay up to £116m for Wirtz with the intention of making him the centrepiece of a new-look attack.

Up to now Wirtz has only shone in fits and starts - often going missing in the biggest games for the Merseysiders.

He is under contract until 2030 - but may be already running out of time to convince his employers of his long-term suitability for the project.

A report by Christian Falk in his CF Bayern Insider column is now strongly hinting that Wirtz is once again emerging as a target for Vincent Kompany’s side.

Alongside Wael Mohya - a Borussia Monchengladbach prodigy - Wirtz is a name in the frame for a Bayern arrival next summer.

“Bayern Munich are paying close attention to Wael Mohya (17),” he writes.

“I can say that Bayern knocked on the door of Mohya’s side. He’s an interesting player and, as we’ve mentioned before, Bayern are looking to bolster their offensive ranks.

“The teenager is more of a central player but he can also play on the left wing.

“He’s young and not so expensive at the moment, with a contract running until 2028. The value is around €17m [£14.2m] but I think Bayern Munich would have to pay more than that.

“Nonetheless, this is one idea they have inside the club and Mohya is on the shortlist.

“I can say that there are also players from Portugal and from the Premier League on the shortlist.

“One player, as everyone knows, is at Liverpool.”

Will Liverpool suffer a loss on Wirtz?

That player is bound to be Wirtz. Bayern were stung by his choice to move to the Premier League in the first place - so used have they become to hoovering up the best Bundesliga talents at will.

Now though they may finally get their man if Liverpool decide to cash in next summer.

Wirtz has therefore been served a reminder - shape up consistently or else risk being offloaded.

Liverpool would do well to claw back the entire nine-figure fee for Wirtz but a deal could nonetheless be struck for the playmaker.
