“I can’t believe the lack of standards”: Neville delivers brutal verdict on Man Utd after Bournemouth rout
Gary Neville has accused some Manchester United players of lacking standards and questioned their professionalism after the 3-0 home defeat to Bournemouth.
United were booed off at Old Trafford on Sunday as their winless run stretched to eight games in all competitions. It was a sixth defeat in 12 games this season, following Wednesday's Champions League loss in Como.
The result has left Michael Carrick's future as head coach in serious doubt. Bruno Fernandes was an unused substitute after publicly criticising Carrick's tactics against Como, while Lisandro Martinez, who spoke out against the club's hierarchy after the Atletico Madrid game, only came on in the second half.
Speaking on his Sky Sports podcast, the former United captain said the players had downed tools.
"It was a shocker today, a nothing of a performance," Neville said.
"Nothing against Tottenham here, nothing against Como, nothing against Atletico Madrid. A little bit against Leeds, it was a bit of a fight, but nothing against Fulham. That was a waste of time.
"So, this is a pattern of nothings, of players switching off and downing tools."
"They've turned on him"
Neville defended his former teammate, describing Carrick as "a brilliant man" with "integrity, credibility, decency, professionalism", and placed the blame on the squad.
"He's not been able to get a tune out of them and they've turned on him," he said. "I know that because if Bruno's turned on him publicly, with that little statement, imagine what they're like behind the scenes.
"There's a few of them that aren't that professional. There's a couple of them. I live in Manchester, they're not that professional, some of them.
"I've got no time for them. There's a few of them that don't go to bed at the right time. Don't eat the right things. Don't think about Manchester United every single minute of every single day.
"They are not living and breathing this football club, as they should be, like professionals should.
"And why? Why? Because it's gone to their heads. But they still walk around like they're King William... they're not, they're nothing.
"Nothing, some of those players. I can't believe the lack of standards. There was a banner in the first half that was held up in the Stretford End -- 'standards.' They went a long time ago."
