Jamie Carragher has said he would take Trent Alexander-Arnold back at Liverpool and believes the defender knows 'he made a big mistake' by leaving for Real Madrid.

Alexander-Arnold left Liverpool for Real Madrid in 2025, after running down his contract at Anfield. The right-back's decision to leave and circumstances around his exit received fierce backlash from the club's supports.

The 28-year-old has struggled to live up to expectations in Spanish football and has started just three La Liga games this season. Alexander-Arnold was used only as a late substitute during Real Madrid's crucial 2-1 win at Barcelona at the weekend.

There has been tentative talk of a potential return to the Reds for the defender, and Carragher believes it could be a sensible move.

He said Liverpool have missed Alexander-Arnold's creativity from full-back and believes the England international could solve several issues for Andoni Iraola's side.

“At the moment, he’s third-choice right-back for Real Madrid. When you’re third choice at a club, they’re obviously wanting you to move on," Carragher told The Overlap Fan Debate.

“I’d have him back. I think he made a big mistake leaving. But if something benefits Liverpool Football Club going forward, when you think of the problems Liverpool have at right-back…

“Ronald Araújo has been fantastic, but we do have a problem in terms of the full-backs’ passing. We’ve definitely missed Trent’s creativity.”
