Steven Gerrard has said he is unsure whether re-signing Trent Alexander-Arnold makes sense for Liverpool.

Alexander-Arnold has been linked with a return to Liverpool after struggling for status at Real Madrid. The right-back has started just four La Liga games for the Spanish side this season, amid competition from Federico Valverde and Denzel Dumfries.

The 28-year-old left Liverpool for Real Madrid in 2025, in a transfer that brought backlash from the club's supporters. Alexander-Arnold ran down his contract at Anfield and eventually signed for Real Madrid for a reduced fee.

His exit came after a decorated period, in which Alexander-Arnold was a central figure in multiple trophy successes. The England international won two Premier League titles and the Champions League among his honours, before deciding to take on a new challenge.

Liverpool have had issues at right-back, but Gerrard is unconvinced that a return make sense for Andoni Iraola. He said Alexander-Arnold's talent makes a deal worth exploring, but is unsure if the defender would fit into the new manager's group going forward.

"Ability wise, talent wise, yes," Gerrard told The Overlap Daily when asked if he would take Alexander-Arnold back at Liverpool.

"What he did for Liverpool in terms of the success, I would say yes. But the ending, and that still being a little bit raw...

"I would say yes, myself personally. Do I think it's the right thing for this group now? This manager? And where Liverpool are at right now? I'm unsure."
