Gerrard says Michael Carrick won’t win back Manchester United dressing room mmid ‘bad group’
Steven Gerrard has said Michael Carrick will not be able to win back the dressing room amid a 'bad group of players' at Manchester United.
Carrick's position is under threat after a poor start to the season that has seen Manchester United take just seven points from eight Premier League games. As a result, United are 16th in the Premier League table.
Successive heavy defeats to Como and Bournemouth have put Carrick's future in doubt, though the 45-year-old is set to remain in charge for this weekend's game with Chelsea.
Gerrard sympathised with Carrick and assistant Steve Holland, placing a large portion of the blame on a 'bad group' at Old Trafford.
"Michael is an intelligent footballer. He knows the game, he knows how Manchester United should play," Gerrard told The Overlap Daily.
"He knows how it looks. Of course he's telling that to those players and giving them that information. For sure, he wants an attacking Manchester United team that's really difficult to play against.
"I sat with Steve Holland for three or four days in Bahrain, and we spoke about football from nine in the morning until five at night. Then we went for food at night and we spoke more football. I learned more in that four days than I've learned off any coach I've worked with. He was absolutely top. His principles of play and how he wants his teams to play. I
"know they will be putting this to the Manchester United players every single day. Surely, they are. Why wouldn't they be? There's a bad group of players at Manchester United."
Manchester United's poor run of results has also come amid controversy off the pitch. Lisandro Martinez hit out at the club's board earlier this week, before captain Bruno Fernandes criticised Carrick's tactics. Fernandes was dropped for the defeat to Bournemouth as a result.
Asked whether Carrick could win back the dressing room, Gerrard argued that the situation was only likely to get worse.
"He won't get these players back. It will snowball now. It will snowball. He won't get them back. It's clear they haven't got a respect for him. Two of the main senior players have undermined him in the last seven days."
