GdS: From Bournemouth to Batman – ‘magic’ Maignan returns in the derby

Against Inter, Diego Moreira took the headlines, but Mike Maignan filled the pages of reports thanks to his save for AC Milan.

Derbies are normally decided by goals, which is why Moreira was this fixture’s poster boy. However, it may have been an Inter man on the front page if it weren’t for Maignan; it must be said.

Maignan’s heroics

As Gazzetta dello Sport writes, ‘when Maignan is magic, Milan don’t lose’ and it’s tough to disagree. Indeed, after the Bournemouth game, he has again proven his worth with some big saves in the derby.

Without him, Djed Spence probably scores and who knows how the game would play out from there. Thankfully, that only has to be imagined, not recalled.

The report references his heroics in the 2022 season, where the Rossoneri lifted the Scudetto and the ‘Magic Mike’ nickname really rose to prominence. It’s no surprise that the same goals are in place again.

With the Frenchman back at his decisive best again, the Diavolo are right to dream because the save against Spence wasn’t his first. Against Sassuolo, Juventus and Lazio, he’s also made big saves. So much so that he’s been called Batman by the paper, he just wears a different crest.
