There are afternoon kickoffs across the red side of Merseyside that carry a bit of extra edge, and then there are matches that feel like a line drawn right through the heart of the modern game.

When Manchester City step out of the tunnel at Anfield on Sunday, the atmosphere won't just be loud it will be loaded.

For weeks, off-pitch legal chatter and corporate spin have dominated the national backpages. But the recent full revelation of City’s guilt over Premier League financial breaches has completely transformed the complexion of this fixture.

The noise from the courtrooms has finally spilled out into the open, and for Liverpool supporters across the red side of Merseyside, it hits a very specific, deeply personal nerve.

Let’s not pretend otherwise: no fan base in England felt the raw impact of City’s creative accounting quite like Liverpool.

Between 2018 and 2022, Jürgen Klopp built a generational, breathtaking football team one that amassed 97 and 92 points in two staggering campaigns, only to watch the title slip away by a single solitary point on both occasions.

To give everything, reach perfection, and still come up short against a machine operating under a different set of rules remains a bitter pill to swallow.

Former Manchester United defender Gary Neville, speaking on The Overlap on Thursday, warned that Maresca and his players should be preparing for what could be an unprecedentedly hostile afternoon:

"I think if they want an understanding of how angry the game [as a whole] is going to be, then Anfield will tell them a week on Sunday, like you would never believe. I suspect there may be banners, there’ll certainly be chanting, there’ll be a reception like you have never seen for them at Anfield. The players to be fair that are there will take the brunt of it, so will Maresca, the reality of it is on that day, but it will be a brutal day."

Neville isn't wrong about the hostility, but as any seasoned Red knows, a loud crowd alone doesn't score goals. There is always the danger that a siege mentality an 'us against the world' narrative fuels City into a defiant performance. They have already shown this season that they possess the quality to beat most teams in the Premier League if given room to settle.

That is where Andoni Iraola’s side come in. There will be immense pressure on Liverpool to deliver a result, but they can count on that little extra help from the stands to create a true cauldron within the stadium.

If Liverpool can harness that raw energy, start with tempo, and get on top of them early, it could be a chastening day for Maresca and his squad. With the whole of English football effectively behind us, the Reds simply have to capitalise and make it count.
