Freddy Bernal commits to Chelsea until 2029 as academy keeper rises
Chelsea have tied academy goalkeeper Freddy Bernal to a new contract running until at least June 2029, rewarding a steady start to the season with Cobham Next Gen.
Bernal rewarded after a strong start for Next Gen
The 18-year-old has been with Chelsea since joining the academy as an Under-8, and the club confirmed his new deal on its official website. Bernal became a full-time scholar in 2025/26 and established himself as the Under-18s goalkeeper, winning the Under-18 Premier League title at Stamford Bridge.
He has since stepped up to Cobham Next Gen and has been a regular between the posts this season. Bernal has made eight appearances so far, and kept a clean sheet in Chelsea’s most recent EFL Trophy match against Reading.
The club highlighted his maturity as he has moved through the age groups, describing him as a reliable presence in goal.
European nights and England recognition
Bernal’s development has not been limited to domestic football. He gained European experience in the UEFA Youth League last season, with the club pointing to standout performances against Bayern Munich, Benfica and Ajax.
His form has also caught the eye of England’s youth coaches. Bernal has previously represented the Young Lions at Under-17 and Under-18 level, and he featured for the Under-19s during the September and October international window.
Goalkeeping depth back in focus
The announcement comes at a time when goalkeeping has been a talking point at Chelsea. Emi Martínez is recovering after surgery, and Xabi Alonso has backed Mike Penders to show his qualities while the first choice is out.
Bernal is not part of that first-team picture, and nothing in the club’s statement suggests a change to his pathway. The new deal is a longer term decision: it keeps a home-grown goalkeeper who has come through every stage at Cobham under contract while he continues to develop with Next Gen and England’s youth sides.
For Bernal, the immediate focus is more minutes at Next Gen level, with the EFL Trophy offering him further experience against senior opposition.

Martínez has given an update on his expected return after surgery.
The injury opened the door for Mike Penders to step in for the Tottenham game.
