Flora Tallinn knock Chelsea’s Cobham Next Gen out of the Youth League 5-4 on aggregate
Flora Tallinn, a club in its first Youth League campaign, have ended Chelsea's Under-19s' European run in their opening tie. Xabi Alonso watched two of his recent first-team debutants start an exit that raises questions for an academy meant to feed his squad.
Chelsea’s Under-19s are out of the UEFA Youth League. Playing as Cobham Next Gen, they were beaten by Flora Tallinn at the Cobham Training Centre on Wednesday 4 November. The game kicked off at 1pm UK time and was shown live to CFC+ subscribers.
Alonso, John Terry and Cole Palmer were all at Cobham to watch. Two of Alonso’s recent first-team debutants, Reggie Watson and Mahdi Nicoll-Jazuli, were in the starting XI.
Chelsea led twice. Winger Mathis Eboué cut inside and scored after only 94 seconds. Alamaa levelled after 17 minutes. Within two minutes of the restart, Rabbaj had put Chelsea back ahead from an Eboué cross. The forward had come off the bench at the interval, with Alfie Osborne making way. Midfielder Marten Kukkonen equalised nine minutes later. Defender Tayo Subuloye then gave away the penalty that settled the tie.
Alamaa carried a debutant club past two-time winners
Alamaa was the difference across both legs. Kukkonen was the only other Flora scorer in the tie.
The gap in experience looked wide on paper. To reach this stage, the Estonian side had come through the first round. Chelsea have won the competition twice. They also reached the final through the domestic champions path in 2018/19.
The first leg on 28 October offered warning signs. Jashayde Greenwood and captain Chizaram Ezenwata scored for Chelsea. But they finished with nine players. Dante Waite was sent off, and Isaac Badu was later shown a second yellow card.
Before that game, Cobham Next Gen head coach Harry Hudson described Flora as very well coached, with a clear plan in possession. He said Chelsea could make use of their physical strength. Over two legs, the Estonian side’s organisation held up.
The exit raises questions for an academy meant to feed Alonso
This is a shock European exit for a group meant to supply the first team. It raises questions about academy standards. It also adds scrutiny to the youngsters pushing for senior minutes, including the two debutants who started.
Under the 2026/27 rules, clubs from the top-ranked associations start the domestic champions path in the second round. Its three two-legged rounds produce ten places in the round of 32.
For Flora, the result is historic. Their opponent will be the winner of the St Patrick’s Athletic, Thór Akureyri and FK Žalgiris section of the bracket. Third-round first legs are on 25 November, with second legs on 9 December.
