Tottenham need a first Premier League win, and Mateus Fernandes’ bench role against Manchester United has left Roberto De Zerbi with a midfield decision before Coventry visit on Monday, 19 October. The figures make a case for changing the starting XI, not for declaring Tottenham’s chance-creation problem solved.

Fernandes has the stronger comparison

Tottenham’s last league outing brought a stoppage-time draw at Manchester United. They now host newly promoted Coventry, who had won their previous two Premier League matches, with a lack of chances created from midfield identified as one concern in the report by Yahoo Sports.

De Zerbi started Sandro Tonali, Lucas Bergvall and Conor Gallagher at Old Trafford, while Fernandes came on from the bench. The comparison cited by Yahoo gives Fernandes a 6.75 FotMob rating in the Premier League so far, against Bergvall’s 6.09. Fernandes also creates 1.79 more chances per 90 and averages 0.90 more shots.

There are further advantages in the figures supplied: Fernandes wins possession in the final third 1.08 times per match, makes 3.59 accurate passes per 90 and completes 94 per cent of his passes. Bergvall’s passing accuracy is 86.5 per cent. On those measures, Fernandes has a clear statistical argument to replace him alongside Tonali.

A stronger profile is not a complete answer

The question is what sits ahead of that pair. Gallagher occupied the No. 10 role against United, and Yahoo’s report argues that James Maddison should take the more advanced place against Coventry. Maddison and Fernandes both came on in Manchester, while Rodrigo Bentancur was sent off for violent conduct after his introduction.

That proposed balance matters: the report’s case is for Fernandes in a deeper role, with Maddison supplying the advanced option, rather than asking Fernandes to solve every part of the attack. Tottenham’s midfield build-up under De Zerbi is part of the wider context, but the cited figures compare Fernandes with Bergvall; they do not establish how effectively the whole midfield will create chances.

The report says Tottenham have other attackers who can play in the advanced role and notes Maddison’s combined 22 goals and assists in 2024-25. That record is relevant context, not proof of current form or a guarantee of what he can produce in this match. Fernandes’ passing and chance figures offer evidence for a selection change, but they do not show that one player can remove a broader creative shortage.

The call for Coventry

The statistical snapshot is persuasive in its limited terms: Fernandes leads Bergvall in rating, chances created, shots, final-third possession wins and passing accuracy. The report recommends Fernandes beside Tonali, with Maddison as the No. 10, but that remains an opinion rather than a confirmed selection.

Tottenham’s choice is therefore not simply whether Fernandes’ numbers are better. It is whether De Zerbi pairs him with Tonali and gives Maddison the advanced role, leaving the side with a distinct source of creativity ahead of them. The starting XI on Monday will provide the answer.
