Fenerbahçe vs Liverpool match preview
Despite their up and down form in the Premier League, Liverpool boast a perfect record in the Champions League, so will that continue as they travel over 1,700 miles east? Following wins over Atlético Madrid and then LASK, the Reds came from 2-0 down to beat Villarreal 4-3 at Anfield a fortnight ago. Alexis Mac Allister bagging a brace, while Ronald Araújo and Florian Wirtz were also on target.
Since the introduction of the league phase, Liverpool have finished first and then third, seeking something similar. Given that their remaining opponents are Club Brugge, Porto, Inter and Lens, they should very much finish towards the top of the gigantic table again.
Back in the Premier League, Andoni Iraola's side were beaten for just the second time this season on Sunday, narrowly losing 1-0 against Arsenal. The Reds though have very little time to stew over that result, as they make the long journey to Türkiye, seeking another Champions League win.
As for Fenerbahçe, this is their first appearances in the Champions League since 2008. Having fallen in qualifying no fewer than nine times without success, the Yellow Canaries overcame Górnik Zabrze, Sturm Graz and then Olympique Lyonnais during the summer to secure their long-awaited return.
So now, their aim is to claim a first Champions League win in 18 years. To date, Fenerbahçe have drawn both home matches, most-recently throwing away two points against Slavia Prague, only managing a draw, despite leading 2-0 inside 11 minutes.
Meantime, on the road, they were demolished 6-0 at Villa Park last month, the club's biggest defeat in any competition for 34 years. A few weeks later, following defeat against Galatasaray in the Intercontinental, manager İsmail Kartal was sacked, meaning former Liverpool attacker Dirk Kuyt will be in interim charge. Şükrü Saracoğlu Stadium will, as one would expect, be absolutely rocking, but Liverpool should have too much quality for Fenerbahçe on the banks of the Bosporus.
Fenerbahçe team news
Dirk Kuyt is without Nathan Aké, Jayden Oosterwolde and Marco Asensio due to injury, but there were numerous familiar faces in their XI beaten by Göztepe on Saturday. Englishman Archie Brown will return at left-back, with French duo N'Golo Kanté and Mattéo Guendouzi at the base of midfield.
Elsewhere, Ederson will be the man donning the gloves, while Romelu Lukaku led the line at the weekend. He has scored five career goals against the Reds, the most-recent of which came in a Merseyside derby 11 years ago. However, having scored just once for Fenerbahçe, Vedat Muriqi could got the nod in attack, with Mason Greenwood in attack; the less said about him the better.
Liverpool team news
Having sat out the previous three matches, both Dominik Szoboszlai and Víctor Muñoz came off the bench during the second half against Arsenal. How fit either of them are remains a question mark. Andoni Iraola's big call on Sunday was starting teenager Trey Nyoni at the base of midfield, but will Ryan Gravenberch return this time?
If Iraola does want to rotate, Kostas Tsimikas will come in at left-back, while Rio Ngumoha will displace Cody Gakpo in attack, following his pair of assists in the last Champions League tie against Villarreal
