Fabrizio Romano bombshell: ‘World-class’ Man Utd star ‘expected to leave’ in June
Manchester United are reportedly planning to part ways with their longtime servant Luke Shaw at the end of the season.
The 31-year-old is the most senior MUFC player, having joined the club in the summer of 2014, sealing a £30 million move from Southampton.
The London native has often been hampered by injuries, and this has been the case since the start of the season. But he still managed to make 330 appearances for the club.
Man Utd looking to replace Luke Shaw next season
After failing to recruit a new left-back in the summer, Man Utd left Shaw without a natural understudy. Therefore, Michael Carrick has been forced to improvise in his absence, switching various players to cover for the currently injured stalwart, including Diogo Dalot and Ayden Heaven.
But according to Fabrizio Romano, United are planning to ring the changes next season, and Shaw won’t be part of the club’s plans.
The Italian journalist revealed as much in his latest appearance on his official YouTube channel, insisting that many people at the club are under scrutiny, including Carrick and the club directors.
As for the squad, several players are expected to make way for new arrivals. However, Shaw was the only one named as a likely outgoing. Romano said the full-back is expected to leave at the end of the season.
The experienced full-back would depart on a free transfer, as his contract is to expire in June.
Why parting ways with Shaw could be risky business for Man United
While some would argue injuries have prevented him from truly fulfilling his initial promise, Shaw has been Man Utd’s first-choice left-back for more than 12 years, at least when fit.
United’s former head coach Ruben Amorim had once described the Southampton academy product as a ‘world-class’ player.
Between his recurring injuries, relatively advanced playing age, and considerable salary, it’s easy to see why INEOS could choose to end their collaboration with the England international.
However, such a decision would carry risk, as evidenced by the club’s struggles to replace Casemiro, despite buying three new central midfielders.
| Shaw’s Senior Career Stats | Appearances | Goals | Assists |
| Man Utd | 330 | 5 | 31 |
| Southampton | 67 | 0 | 1 |
| England | 34 | 3 | 9 |
Moreover, Shaw’s departure would leave MUFC needing not one, but TWO new left-backs, and the club directors have already witnessed the lack of inspiring options on the market first-hand last summer.
It should also be noted that the falling Premier League giants have several playing roles to address in 2027, so they wouldn’t want to spend the bulk of their budget on signing two left-backs.
All in all, sending Shaw packing has its pros and cons, so the management should carefully evaluate it between now and the end of the season rather than making a hasty decision.
