FootballTransfers understands that Manchester United and Everton are in discussions over a possible January move for Marcus Rashford.

The England winger has failed to have the desired impact since his surprising return to Old Trafford in the summer. Man Utd fully expected to sell Rashford, if not to loan club Barcelona, then at least to another suitor, but things did not turn out that way.

The 28-year-old failed to attract a project that appealed to him, while Man Utd were unwilling to budge from their €30 million valuation. Combined with his sizeable wage, Rashford was not deemed a sensible investment by clubs that might otherwise have been keen to sign a player of his quality.

The versatile forward enjoyed a strong season at Barcelona, producing 14 goals and 15 assists, but he has been unable to replicate that output since being offered an olive branch by former teammate Michael Carrick and reintegrated into the Man Utd first team.

Rashford has made six starts across all competitions, but he has yet to directly contribute to a goal. The cautious optimism that some of his early performances sparked has given way to resignation. He's still the same inconsistent forward who was exiled by Ruben Amorim in late 2024.

Everton exploring Rashford move

Sources tell FootballTransfers that Rashford's time at Man Utd is expected to - belatedly - come to an end in 2027. In fact, the 28-year-old could depart the club again as early as January.

We understand that Everton have already held discussions over a possible move in the winter. Given that it's not even November yet, these talks are still at an early stage, with no guarantee of success.

It remains to be seen if the Toffees will attempt to complete an outright purchase, or if they would prefer a loan with a permanent element. The player's stance will also be important. In the summer, Rashford was unwilling to entertain a move to another English club.

The structure of the deal will ultimately depend on the finances. If Rashford is keen and the package required to reach an agreement is reasonable, a permanent transfer could be on the cards.

The interest from Everton shouldn't be surprising. They desperately need attacking reinforcements after their failure to sign Folarin Balogun on Deadline Day left them with just Thierno Barry as a recognised striker.

It is no secret that Rashford prefers playing on the left, but he suggested last year that he was no longer as averse to playing in a central role as he had been previously.

"For me, playing as a number nine is becoming more comfortable, more natural," Rashford told xBuyer in June 2025. "Small things, such as playing back to goal, it’s becoming easier for me. You’re always in front of the goal, so you’re always dangerous."

Everton have scored the fewest goals in the Premier League's top half and are poised to have a big January despite being up for sale (again). David Moyes is surely confident that he could revive Rashford's ailing career, as he did with Jack Grealish last season.

At this stage, it can't be said for certain that Rashford will end up at the Hill Dickinson Stadium in January, but Everton are trying to pull it off.
