Manchester United head coach Michael Carrick could be sacked in the next few hours, but he still decided to show up at Carrington on Monday.

The 45-year-old’s job is hanging by a thread after suffering embarassing back-to-back defeats to Como (1-4) and Bournemouth (0-3) last week.

The Red Devils have only registered two victories in 12 matches across all competitions this season, and they are winless in their last eight. Following Sunday’s loss to the Cherries, they plummeted to a miserable 16th place in the Serie A table.

On Sunday, the Old Trafford faithful voiced their support for Carrick despite the horrific result, instead directing their anger at the players, directors, and owners.

But despite being the most popular man at the club, the 45-year-old is unlikely to survive the woeful run, especially amid rifts with the squad. For instance, MUFC captain Bruno Fernandes was dropped to the bench this weekend after publicly criticising the manager’s tactics after the defeat in Como.

On Monday, Man Utd’s top officials were all spotted arriving at Carrington in the morning for crunch talks. This includes CEO Omar Berrada, Director of Football Jason Wilcox, and Head of Recruitment Christopher Vivell.

Needless to say, Carrick isn’t part of the meeting, as the ongoing discussion centres around his future. However, the head coach still decided to drop by on the team’s day off.

According to multiple sources, including ESPN journalist Rob Dawson, Carrick arrived at the club’s training ground to attend a behind-closed-doors friendly between Man Utd U21 and Hull City U21.

What will Man Utd decide?

Unlike his predecessor, Ruben Amorim, Carrick has been keen to follow the club’s youth teams whenever possible, emphasising the academy’s great significance.

Ever so diligent, the Wallsend native is seemingly determined to perform his duties, even though the sack decision appears imminent.

At this stage, it’s incredibly difficult to imagine Carrick remaining in charge in time for Man Utd’s upcoming game against Chelsea on Saturday.

Eddie Howe has emerged as the favourite to replace the former MUFC midfielder, but bringing in a temporary caretaker for the Stamford Bridge game could be a more plausible scenario.
