Eddie Howe has admitted that the injury that forced Bruno Guimaraes off in the first half of Newcastle’s 3-0 win over PSV on Wednesday night is ‘a worry’.
Goals from Yoane Wissa, Anthony Gordon and Harvey Barnes wrapped up a routine home triumph for the Magpies as they took a huge step towards the last-16 of the Champions League.
Guimaraes injury marred memorable Newcastle evening
However, the evening was marred by the injury to Guimaraes, which forced the Newcastle skipper off on the stroke of half time.
The Brazilian was instrumental in Wissa’s early goal, winning possession before playing in to compatriot Joelinton, who teed up the summer signing for an easy finish.
Guimaraes limped off the pitch shortly before the break with a suspected ankle injury, which Howe is concerned about.
Captain ankle injury 'a worry'
“He's a little bit sore and there's a little bit of swelling around his ankle,” the Newcastle boss said after the game.
“We hope it's not serious but it's difficult to know. It's a worry that he's had to come off.”
The 28-year-old was replaced by Lewis Miley for the second half, the youngster ending the game at right-back following Kieran Trippier’s late withdrawal.
Howe and Newcastle now face an anxious wait to determine the full extent of Guimarae’ ankle issue.
Newcastle face testing week
The Magpies welcome Aston Villa to St. James’ Park on Sunday afternoon in a bid to make it five wins from their last six at home.
And Newcastle round off their Champions League league phase campaign with a trip to PSG next week.
Howe’s side currently sit seventh in the league, and victory in Paris would guarantee Newcastle an automatic spot in the last-16.
