Dominic Solanke is making Tottenham fans ask a strange Conor Gallagher question
Right now in the 2026/27 season, Tottenham Hotspur have scored just three goals against Premier League caliber opponents. And those two goals have both been scored by Conor Gallagher, who found the back of the net against Liverpool in the 3-1 League Cup loss and also scored in a 3-2 defeat to Aston Villa. Given the other goal against the Lions was scored by center back Jan Paul van Hecke, Gallagher is the only midifelder or forward to score for Spurs this season.
As such, Tottenham are currently sitting dead last in the Premier League table after five Matchdays at the September international break, and while anyone who has been watching Spurs every single week in 2026 can see clear improvements over time in how the team actually plays under Roberto De Zerbi, everything feels so dire because the club can't buy a win.
And the main reason why Spurs can't win is because they can't score goals. They have possession, they are creating chances and shooting (even if they could still be doing better at both), but they are hopeless in terms of scoring.
Dominic Solanke has been the main culprit
The player most at fault is Dominic Solanke, as the veteran striker has been objectionably awful for Tottenham Hotspur. He was a problem in his first two seasons at the club, but with Roberto De Zerbi going back to him as the No. 9 and shifting Omar Marmoush to the left with Richarlison not even in the squad after a transfer deadline day feud began, Solanke's issues are sticking out even more.
He is not able to score or even get into positions to score, and he is so lacking in fight and so passive that most Spurs fans do not have any hopes of the former Bournemouth ace turning it around and looking remotely like a 65 million pound (then record) signing.
Conor Gallagher is not a striker at all. And Tottenham should not even think about starting him at striker in all seriousness. But Dominic Solanke has been so dreadful at getting into positions in the box or fighting for the ball that Gallagher actually looks like a more credbile option up top because The British Bulldog at least fights for those opportunities. Objectively, he's been better, too, as he has two goals to zero for Solanke.
All of this goes back to how terrible Solanke has been. The idea of Gallagher or someone who isn't a striker being thrown up top sounds ridiculous on paper, but it is less ridiculous when you compare Gallagher at a false nine to how unproductive Solanke has been. Hopefully, Solanke can turn things around, but that's all he has going for him; the hope he can be the fluke he was in the 2023/24 season when he scored 19 goals for the Cherries.
