Chelsea journalist drops blockbuster Trent Alexander-Arnold transfer update
Chelsea are interested in signing Trent Alexander-Arnold from Real Madrid, with Xabi Alonso potentially ready to make a move for the England international as Malo Gusto's future at Stamford Bridge looks to be coming to an end.
The 28-year-old has endured a difficult spell in Spain after leaving Liverpool, struggling to establish himself as a regular starter amid concerns over his fitness and form.
His situation has given Chelsea an opportunity to bring him back to the Premier League and are considering making changes at right-back with Gusto recently made available for transfer.
Although a deal for Alexander-Arnold is only at the rumour stage, a solid source has confirmed the Blues' interest is genuine.
Chelsea interest in Trent Alexander-Arnold receives fresh update
According to Chelsea journalist Simon Phillips, via CaughtOffside, Chelsea's interest in Alexander-Arnold is becoming more significant with the Blues genuinely seriously considering signing him.
The report claims the Blues will overhaul the right-back position, with captain Reece James increasingly being used as a midfielder and Gusto available after speculation over his future during the summer transfer window.
The Frenchman was previously linked with Manchester City, but although a move then failed to materialise, Chelsea are prepared to consider offers for him again.
Alexander-Arnold, meanwhile, is going through a difficult period at Real Madrid. Despite arriving at the Santiago Bernabeu with a reputation as one of Europe's most creative full-backs, he has struggled to put in consistent performances.
Phillips hasn't said a transfer is imminent, but the possibility of Gusto leaving could make Alexander-Arnold's situation one of the biggest stories to keep an eye on in the coming weeks.
Malo Gusto could make way for Real Madrid star
Alexander-Arnold would offer Chelsea a different profile at right-back, particularly with his passing range, crossing ability and experience at the highest level.
He won major honours during his time at Liverpool, including the Premier League and Champions League, and has also represented England at international tournaments.
His arrival would raise questions about how Alonso intends to use his defensive options. James remains a key figure when fit with Pedro Neto also featuring in a wing-back role.
Gusto has shown promise since joining Chelsea from Lyon, but uncertainty over his long-term place in the side looks like a departure is inevitable if the Blues' valuation is met.
There would also be risks attached to signing Alexander-Arnold. His recent struggles for regular football in Madrid mean Chelsea would need to be confident he could rediscover his best form in England.
