Ecuador have left Moises Caicedo out of their squad for the coming international break because of ongoing fitness concerns, handing Chelsea a valuable window to work on his recovery.

Gallardo confirms squad decision

New Ecuador boss Marcelo Gallardo confirmed his squad selection on Sunday, and there’s no place for Caicedo as El Tri prepare to face South Korea and Japan in a pair of friendlies during the break.

Caicedo’s contribution to Chelsea’s 2026-27 campaign so far amounts to just 14 minutes of competitive football after he suffered a calf injury in pre-season. He was forced off again after being rushed back for the win over Brighton, and he wasn’t included in the matchday squad for Chelsea’s defeat at Brentford.

Piero Hincapie and Club Brugge’s Joel Ordonez were also left out of the Ecuador squad because of injury issues.

What it means for Chelsea

This is exactly the kind of break Chelsea need. With Caicedo staying in England rather than travelling to South America, Xabi Alonso gets roughly three weeks to work with him directly and oversee his recovery without the added strain of international travel and matches.

According to the report, both Caicedo and Hincapie are expected to be fully fit by the end of the international break. That’s a sensible, cautious approach given how this calf issue has dragged on – we’ve seen enough of the stop-start recovery already, with Caicedo initially targeting a return before that setback against Brighton and his subsequent absence covered in our Brentford injury update.

No exact return date or fixture has been confirmed, and rightly so – Chelsea will want him back for good, not for another quarter of an hour before limping off again.

The other omissions

Hincapie’s situation at Arsenal mirrors Caicedo’s in some ways. He’s made just four appearances this season, the most recent coming nearly two weeks ago in the Champions League trip to Napoli, and he was an unused substitute in Arsenal’s defeat at Brighton. Gallardo clearly decided a clean sheet of Premier League absentees was the sensible call, with Ordonez joining them on the sidelines.
