Carrick urges United to become streetwise after Spurs setback
Michael Carrick has told Manchester United to become more streetwise, stubborn and stronger after they surrendered a lead against 10-man Tottenham in a 1-1 draw at Old Trafford on Saturday 10 October. Dominic Solanke’s stoppage-time equaliser denied United a win and extended a difficult league run, leaving Carrick demanding a swift improvement from his squad.
The three-part message came after United had taken the lead and gained a numerical advantage, only to fail to control the closing stages. The Peoples Person reported Carrick’s post-match demands and his insistence that United must move in a positive direction quickly.
United let a winning position slip
Bryan Mbeumo put the Reds ahead in the 73rd minute, but their advantage was short-lived in context: five minutes later, Rodrigo Bentancur was sent off for headbutting Luke Shaw. United had both the lead and an extra player, yet Solanke headed home in stoppage time to rescue a point for Tottenham.
Carrick said United have to see out matches when they are ahead, regardless of whether the opposition has 10 players or 11. He pointed to practical ways of doing that: keeping possession, managing the ball better in and around the other side’s box, pinning opponents back or defending decisive moments more effectively.
The league table makes the cost of the dropped points plain. United have six points from six matches, sit 12th and have won only once in the league.
Carrick wants a faster response
Carrick did not disguise his frustration with United’s points return, while making clear he believes the team can turn things around. His central demand was for greater resilience in the moments that decide whether a promising position becomes a victory.
“We’re more than capable of doing that. Just got to be a little bit more streetwise in the moments and a little bit more stubborn and a little bit more stronger in seeing out certain things,” Carrick said after the match.
That is a pointed diagnosis, not simply a call for more effort. United had the conditions to protect their lead, but did not make the game sufficiently difficult for Spurs or prevent the late chance that produced the equaliser.
Carrick also said he did not feel let down by the players, adding that they care and that mistakes can happen. He accepted, though, that the squad must improve and said his confidence in the players remained intact even as he stressed that United need to add points to their tally.
A recurring problem for the Reds
The Tottenham result continued a three-game winless run in the league, while the source described United’s opening six matches as their worst league start since 1986/87. The same account noted that United had also been eliminated from the League Cup after surrendering an early 2-0 lead against Brighton.
| Match detail | Record |

United’s next test is away to Atletico Madrid in the Champions League on Tuesday 13 October. Carrick has set out the standards he expects; the challenge is turning them into control when United are next in a position to close out a result.
