Michael Carrick insists he does not need any assurances over his future as Manchester United manager despite growing criticism ahead of Saturday’s clash with Chelsea.

United have endured a poor start to the season, leading to speculation around Carrick’s position.

But the United boss says he has not sought any assurances over his future at the club.

“I don’t need any assurances from anyone,” he said.

“I totally get the position and understand the responsibilities, understand what comes with that, so I really don’t need any assurances from anyone in that regard.

“I don’t see it really. I see the things that I need to see. I don’t look for it, it doesn’t really help in any way.

“I care about what the supporters think, about what it feels like in the stadium and for travelling to games to come and see us, support us.

“I care about what we give them and offer them and what they see.

“I genuinely don’t take any notice of anything else. I know this job, I know what it brings and what we need to do to be better. I don’t need anyone else to tell me anything else.”

Carrick also played down any suggestion of an issue with Bruno Fernandes after the midfielder did not feature against Bournemouth, following comments he made following the defeat to Como in which he questioned the team’s tactics.

“It was a decision for what we felt for the game. That’s it,” he said.

“Bruno is fully committed to this football club and there’s absolutely no issues with that.

“We move forward, we make decisions as we go and we’re looking forward to the game on Saturday now.”

Asked whether he was surprised to still be in charge, Carrick added: “No.

“I’m here to do my job and the best for the team and I’m desperate to make us better and improve things.

“I’m not surprised, no.”
