Carrick hails Man Utd supporters after long-awaited win – and gives update on Baleba injury worry
Manchester United boss Michael Carrick says he is “delighted” for the fans after the support they have given him, following his side’s 3-2 win over Roma.
United ended a nine-game winless run in dramatic fashion at Old Trafford, with a Bruno Fernandes penalty and two goals from Matheus Cunha completing a remarkable second-half turnaround.
The victory provided some much-needed relief for Carrick and his players, who had faced mounting pressure following a dreadful run of results.
“Proud of the players, I think they deserve a lot of credit for pulling through that in a tough situation,” Carrick said after the game.
“Happy for the supporters. I could feel they were desperate for us to give them something they could get their teeth into.
“As frustrated and disappointed as we all were going in at half-time, I spoke with the players at half-time about what this place can do in moments and one moment can really flip it.
“We stayed really positive throughout the whole second half so to come through with so many positives, we had to keep going, and I’m really pleased for an awful lot of people.
“It’s one win, we’re not getting too carried away with things, but it was an important one for us.”
United’s supporters had voiced their frustration after another difficult first half, but Carrick praised their contribution to the comeback and insisted the players must continue giving them reasons to get behind the team.
“I understand the frustration and disappointment, I totally get that,” he continued.
“Going back to the way the supporters were with us at Chelsea at the weekend, struggling in the second half, 2-0 down with ten men, they were there at the time it was easy for them not to be there.
“Tonight there was frustration, of course there was, I get that, but I know what they’re like and you’ve got to give them something to go on.
“To be fair to the boys, they did in the second half and that’s when everyone feeds off each other. We’ve got to keep giving them enough for them to be there for us.
“This place does magical things. It’s done it before and it will do it over and over again.”
Despite the celebrations, United were dealt a potential injury blow after midfielder Carlos Baleba suffered a hamstring problem.
Carrick admitted the initial signs were concerning but said the club would need to assess the extent of the injury.
“I haven’t got any more news on Carlos at this stage but obviously it’s his hamstring so we’ll just have to assess what that looks like.
“Initially it doesn’t look great. I haven’t got much more to give you.”
