Manchester United are reportedly interested in signing Al-Ahli striker Ivan Toney as Michael Carrick looks to strengthen his attacking options ahead of the January transfer window.

According to a report from CaughtOffside, the Red Devils have made enquiries about the England international as they search for a short-term solution following Benjamin Sesko’s injury setback. United had also explored a move for Leeds United striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin, but have now abandoned their pursuit after learning that he is in advanced discussions over a new contract.

Ivan Toney attracts Manchester United interest

The 30-year-old has continued to impress in Saudi Arabia since leaving Brentford, maintaining his goalscoring reputation and securing his place in Thomas Tuchel’s England squad ahead of the upcoming World Cup.

Toney has previously been linked with a return to the Premier League, and Manchester United could provide him with an attractive opportunity to return to English football.

The experienced striker has reportedly enjoyed his time with Al-Ahli, but sources suggest he would consider a move back to England if the right opportunity presented itself.

United are looking for an established goalscorer who can provide cover for Sesko during his absence. Toney’s experience, physical presence and ability to deliver consistently in front of goal could make him an ideal short-term addition.

However, the Red Devils are not expected to make a substantial investment in another striker, with a loan move or relatively inexpensive deal considered more realistic.

Manchester United face competition for Toney

Newcastle United, Tottenham Hotspur and Everton are also monitoring the England international, potentially creating competition for his signature in January.

Meanwhile, Jean-Philippe Mateta and Ollie Watkins remain possible alternatives after previously attracting interest from the Old Trafford hierarchy.

Manchester United could also consider strengthening their left-back position, although signing a striker remains their immediate priority.

With Sesko facing an extended spell on the sidelines, United need additional attacking firepower. Toney’s Premier League experience could make him an appealing option, but it remains to be seen whether they can negotiate a suitable agreement with Al-Ahli.
