Regis Le Bris' Sunderland have been the surprise package in the Premier League this season.
  • Burnley lost 3-0 at Tottenham last week, Sunderland beat West Ham 3-0

  • Sunderland took four points off Burnley in the Championship last season

  • Recommended bet: Sunderland to win

Sunderland made the dream start on their Premier League return last weekend as they crushed West Ham 3-0.

Regis Le Bris and his Black Cats will sense a major opportunity ahead of this visit to face Championship winners Burnley at Turf Moor on Saturday.

The Clarets were defeated 3-0 at Tottenham last weekend and have now won just two of their last 21 games at this level.

Team News

Burnley paid in the region of £20m for Armando Broja earlier this month but the Albanian international was not fit enough for last weekend's trip to Tottenham.

Another recent arrival, Lesley Ugochukwu, came off the bench in north London and may start now but Bashir Humphreys, Zeki Amdouni and Jordan Beyer all remain out.

It is unlikely Sunderland fans will see Aji Alese or Luke O'Nien this side of the first international break, while Dennis Cirkin (wrist) and Romaine Mundle (hamstring) are also ruled out.

Wilson Isidor scored off the bench against West Ham but may continue to settle for the supporting role.

The stats

Sunderland took four points from six against Burnley in the Championship last season.

The Clarets (second) finished 24 points ahead of the Black Cats (fourth).

Burnley have kept five clean sheets in their last seven home games against Sunderland.

Burnley have failed to score in three successive games against Sunderland.

None of Sunderland's previous 17 Premier League away games have finished level.

Prediction

Burnley had the Championship's meanest defence last season, by some margin, but the transition to Premier League football is stark and they were on the end of a three-goal reverse at Tottenham last Saturday.

Sunderland were 24 points behind the Clarets in the second tier, but they took four points from Burnley in their head-to-heads and shut them out in both games.

The Black Cats have invested wisely in the summer and their midfield trio of Granit Xhaka, Habib Diarra and Noah Sadiki took lots of plaudits from the win over West Ham.

League debutants Chemsdine Talbi and Simon Adingra also looked good and Wilson Isidor scored off the bench.

It will not be lost on boss Le Bris that opening an early six-point gap on Burnley could be huge for his side, with both of these teams likely to be in and around the relegation scrap.

Scott Parker, meanwhile, is still waiting on summer captures like Armando Broja to get up to full fitness and Burnley's mountain could look quite a bit taller after this initial home outing.
