Brian Brobbey has signed a contract extension with Premier League bottom club Sunderland to keep the striker on Wearside until 2031.

The 24-year-old joined the Black Cats from Ajax last season for a reported £21.6m and impressed in his first year in England, bagging seven goals and an assist.

He went on to star at the World Cup for the Netherlands, scoring three goals in four appearances before their last-32 exit to Morocco.

His three goals this season all came away to Manchester City as he notched a hat-trick in the club’s chaotic 5-3 defeat at the Etihad Stadium.

Brobbey said: “I’m really happy with the confidence the club has shown in me. Since I arrived, I’ve felt the ambition here, and I want to keep growing and improving as a player.

“Representing Sunderland in the Premier League is both an honour and a privilege. I know I still can be a better version of myself, and that’s what motivates me every day.

“I want to score goals, help the team and give our fans something to be proud of.”

Brobbey’s influential debut season in the Premier League sparked transfer interest from some of Europe’s biggest teams, with The Independent reporting earlier this year that Bayern Munich had been monitoring the player with a view to a potential summer move.

Brobbey mostly impressed wealthier clubs with how his movement and physical impact have typified the most in-demand modern forward play.

However, no move away materialised and Brobbey has since been part of the collective struggle at the Stadium of Light. Regis Le Bris’ side sit bottom of the league with just five points in nine matches, six months on from earning Europa League qualification in their first campaign back in the top-flight since promotion.

Brobbey has also endured injury struggles this term, missing four matches across all competitions due to a hamstring injury in October.
