Arsenal's Ethan Nwaneri decision is coming back to haunt them already
In the summer, Arsenal opted to loan out Ethan Nwaneri. In a summer where many were sold permanently, the Gunners chose to wave goodbye to Nwaneri indefinitely.
The young Englishman is tipped for a bright future, and loaning him to Borussia Dortmund was dubbed the a great option. After all, the Bundesliga club is one of the best in the world for nurturing young talent, or getting starlet's back on the right track.
Nwaneri needed the second option. He was once an upcoming Arsenal prodigy, but in recent seasons, he's fallen gradually out of favour at Arsenal.
Arsenal could do with Ethan Nwaneri right now
Right now, Arsenal would benefit from having Ethan Nwaneri in the squad. They head into one of the most important fixtures of the season, facing Liverpool at Anfield.
In a fixture that has historically been tough for the Gunners, they are unsure of their options at right-wing. Bukayo Saka is confirmed to be out of action, Noni Madueke is a doubt through injury and Max Dowman is currently suspended, pending an appeal from Arsenal.
Arsenal fans await further news on Dowman's appeal and Madueke's race against injury, but they would be banking on them both less if Nwaneri were still in the squad. Unfortunately, Arsenal can recall him, but not until January.
If Ethan Nwaneri were at Arsenal this season, he would not get much game time. He would be considered around the same level as Max Dowman, but of course he is at the stage of his career where he can not be used sporadically, he needs minutes more than Dowman does.
However, I can't help but feel like Arsenal needs Nwaneri now. Hopefully, we won't lament the decision too much if Madueke or Dowman are cleared to play, but time will tell in that regard.
What options do Arsenal have in the right-wing department?
Bukayo Saka would undoubtedly be the first choice, then it would be Noni Madueke, and then Max Dowman. If neither of the latter two are cleared to play, Mikel Arteta may need to take a different measure.
Arsenal have the option to give Ceadach O'Neill his Premier League debut. The Irishman started, and impressed, in midweek as Arsenal were eliminated by Fleetwood Town. He had a slow start to the game, but he played the pass that set Viktor Gyokeres up for the season.
That said, it would be a brave shout to give O'Neill his senior league debut at Anfield. That would be quite the week for the 18-year-old.
Other options, the more favourable options, would be for Arteta to tinker with his formation or require a positional change. Riccardo Calafiori, despite playing on the left this season, is an option who is versatile enough to cover the right wing. Still, that would be a risk again because Arsenal could do with him defending against Bradley Barcola. Otherwise, there is Ben White, who is comfortable in advanced right-sided positions.
Kai Havertz could prove himself on the right-wing, too, as he's been struggling through the middle as of late.
Desperate times may call for desperate measures. The best-case scenario is that Noni Madueke will be cleared to play, relieving any need to switch tactics.
