After years of waiting: Brighton's star brings Rooney's devastating weapon back to the Premier League

A transcontinental goal

Diego Gomez spotted his chance from the halfway line and let fly. The Brighton midfielder's rocket dropped into Crystal Palace's net on Sunday in the seventh round of the Premier League.

Seven minutes had gone when the Paraguayan noticed Walter Benitez off his line. He struck it from distance, the goalkeeper scrambled back, and the ball nestled in behind him.

The Opta statistics network clocked the strike at 51 metres, the longest-range goal in the Premier League since Wayne Rooney's effort for Everton against West Ham in November 2017, which came from 58 metres.
