An exciting African midfielder is ready to join Liverpool.

Last summer, it felt like the Reds were prepared to discard all their midfielders. If it was up to the fans, that's what would have happened.

Sure, Liverpool's midfield had a torrid time during Arne Slot's final season. However, the season prior to that they were Premier League champions.

It's easy to forget the common adage about form being temporary and class being permanent. Alexis Mac Allister is teaching everyone that poignant message right now with some terrific performances.

Him alongside Trey Nyoni are starting to erase the apparent gaps in the midfield that we all perceived Liverpool had. Andoni Iraola has not only brought the best out of them, but he made them better players as well.

Liverpool are planning to sign a midfielder

Long-term the plan is still to bring in a new reinforcement. Nyoni has stepped up in the place of Curtis Jones, who departed for Inter Milan.

There is now a possibility that Mac Allister's contract is going to be extended. The 28-year-old midfielder's deal expires in 2028 and Liverpool seem open to the idea of giving him a new deal.

Last summer, they were prepared to sell for the right price but no offer was forthcoming.

The future of Ryan Gravenberch and Dominik Szoboszlai also seems quite settled. Both are on long-term deals and the latter has even been tipped to become a future captain at Anfield if and when Virgil van Dijk departs.

But ultimately, another midfielder to bolster the ranks is still in Liverpool's plans.

Abdoulaye Doumbia is ready to join Liverpool

What Liverpool need is another player of Nyoni's ilk. Someone young and hungry who can provide competition for the club's current options and also become a long-term option in the future.

Abdoulaye Doumbia has already admitted he would like to join Liverpool. And he's someone who is now also ready to join the Reds after a spectacular season in Sweden.

Playing in the Allsvenskan where Alexander Isak first made his mark, Doumbia has emerged as one of the best young midfielders playing outside of Europe's top five leagues.

Doumbia is composed on the ball, fantastic at playing out in the build-up. He ranks among the top five midfielders for passes into the final third (9.38 per 90 minutes) and in the top 10 midfielders for progressive passes (8.09 per 90 minutes) in the league.

On top of that he also averages the fourth most successful defensive actions (9.58 per 90 minutes) among midfielders and ranks first for possession-adjusted interceptions (7.54 per 90 minutes).

He's a technically gifted midfielder who excels defensively and covers a lot of ground. Based on his numbers he's shown not only that he is the perfect midfielder for Iraola's side but that he's ready to make the step-up to the Premier League and join the Reds.
