Villarreal striker Georges Mikautadze has announced his intention to join a "big club," and this will surely have piqued the interest of Manchester United.

The Red Devils are in desperate need of a new centre-forward. Benjamin Sesko hasn't been fully fit in six months, and he is currently sidelined at least until January, while there is now abundant evidence that Joshua Zirkzee can't lead the line.

Man Utd's biggest priority in 2027 will be fixing the defence, but a new striker signing has to be on the agenda as well. However, given the money spent on Sesko and the fact that he still has immense potential, it probably won't be a marquee arrival.

It is likely to be a Zirkzee-type signing for a fee below €50 million, and even that might be a stretch in January. Perhaps Man Utd will have to resort to loan deals or market opportunities, depending on how the window turns out.

If Man Utd are able to spend some money on a new striker, they could do worse than a player who was eyed by Barcelona after scoring 16 goals last season. That player is Villarreal ace Mikautadze.

Mikautadze wants to join a "big club"

The 26-year-old has had an eventful career to date. Born in France, Mikautadze represents Georgia at the international level, but he has spent most of his career in the country of his birth.

He has made several transfers for respectable fees in recent years, but it has not always worked out for him. He was a flop at Ajax after joining from long-time club Metz for €16m in 2023.

After a loan back to the French side, he re-signed permanently for €13m in 2024 and was then immediately flipped for a €5.5m profit to hometown club Lyon. There, he bagged 17 goals in 2024/25, which prompted Villarreal to poach him from the cash-strapped Ligue 1 giants for €31m in 2025.

The striker hit the ground running in Spain, notching 16 goals across all competitions as Villarreal finished third in LaLiga. This season, things are proving a little trickier under new coach Inigo Perez.

The Yellow Submarine have endured a difficult start to the campaign, with Mikautadze netting five times in just over 800 minutes of action. He has scored twice in the Champions League, including a goal against Liverpool last month.

Over the summer, following his impressive debut season in LaLiga, Mikautadze was briefly linked with Barcelona in their search for a replacement for Robert Lewandowski, but no transfer materialised.

Speaking to L'Equipe ahead of Villarreal's Champions League clash with PSG, Mikautadze admitted that linking up with Barcelona would have been a dream come true and announced that he is "ready" to join a "big club."

"It is flattering, and it motivates me even more," he said. "It also means that the work is done well. On top of that, since Xavi-Iniesta-Busquets and MSN [Messi-Suarez-Neymar], I have been a Barca fan."

However, Mikautadze added that he "didn’t think too much about that" and that he "was focused on my pre-season." That's in the past now. The present is not quite as rosy for him. The 26-year-old lost his starting spot in LaLiga in September and only won it back last weekend.

"I want to play every match, to be a starter and show that I’m a great striker. When that isn’t the case, or you come off early, you’re disappointed," Mikautadze admitted. Looking ahead, the Georgian is determined to reach the pinnacle of the European game.

"My dream to play for a big club? I started playing football for that reason," he explained. "I want to have a taste of going even higher. I am 26, but I think that I am ready to go to a big club. I have everything to do it and I try to show it every time. I maybe just need a bit more time."

A good fit for Man Utd

According to data analytics firm SciSports, Mikautadze is not being disrespectful to Villarreal when he says that he's ready to take the next step; it's the truth. He is good enough to be a first-team regular for most top European sides.

This is also reflected in SciSports' Career Advice for Mikautadze. It is believed that he could be a good fit for numerous big-hitters on the continent and in England.

SciSports analyses several factors such as development prospects, expected playing time and tactical suitability to calculate a Club Fit rating. For Mikautadze, the likes of Inter Milan, Bayern Munich, Atalanta and AS Roma all have good scores of 80 or more out of 100.

They are closely followed by Man Utd with 79. His dream club Barcelona clock in with a solid 76. Borussia Dortmund, AC Milan and even PSG could also be good options for him.

With Man Utd in need of a striker, Mikautadze might be a name worth considering, although there would be question marks over his suitability for English football. He is a diminutive forward and might struggle with the physicality of the Premier League.

Prising him away from Villarreal is unlikely to be easy because he is still under contract until 2031, but with his desire to join a bigger club well known and the Spanish side currently languishing in mid-table no man's land in LaLiga, there might be a deal to be done.

His Estimated Transfer Value (ETV) is currently peaking at €40.5 million, making him Villarreal's second-most-valuable player behind Alberto Moleiro.
