4 instant overreactions to Arsenal's eyesore performance (or lack of) against Brighton

Load up Arsenal Fan TV, that was a performance that reminded us of the prime banter era, and the late-stage WengerOut period. At least we're still not sponsored by Puma, I guess.

Arsenal were truly outclassed by Brighton. Sometimes in life, you have to hold your hands in the air and accept defeat, and that match was one of them.

Right from the get-go, Brighton seemed far more up for it than Arsenal did. They pressed with intensity, and Arsenal felt the pressure from the very start.

Now we've got that bloodbath behind us, let's do what Arsenal fans became very good at a few years ago, and overreact.

We were wrong about Christos Tzolis

After his debut against Coventry, we put the weight of the world on Christos Tzolis' shoulders.

He was signed as the only replacement for Leandro Trossard and Gabriel Martinelli, two of Arsenal fans' favourite players. It was always going to be hard replacing even one of them, let alone two.

Against Brighton, and a few teams recently, Tzolis looked out of his depth. He wasn't the only player who failed to make an impact, but this kind of game was not suited to his skill set. He did not react to the pressure applied by Brighton players well enough.

Myles Lewis-Skelly is a better teammate for Declan Rice than Bruno Guimaraes

Not to single out the new signings, but Bruno Guimaraes put in his worst display since joining Arsenal.

In possession, he was fine, but out of possession, he was better off away from the team.

It's a shame, because this game is the game that Arsenal fans will remember for weeks, despite playing well consecutively before this game.

What were those subs, Mikel?

Picture the scene. You're three goals down away from home, but there's still time. You have a stacked bench of players who could turn the game around. Then, on come Martin Zubimendi and Mikel Merino as the first subs. Instant sigh.

At that stage, it felt like damage limitation rather than going out there to at least claw back one point. If keeping the goals out was the play at the hour mark, at least the subs were successful at that, but not at entertaining or inspiring.

I seriously miss being called Set Piece FC

Arsenal's ability from set pieces has fallen off a cliff.

In games like today, where set pieces are the best opportunity to score a goal, fans were on the edge of their seats for each one, only to be disappointed each time Arsenal tried (and failed) to whip in a cross.

Last season, it was Arsenal's bread and butter, but this season, it's like they can't hit a barn door with a banana whenever a dead ball is in front of them.

To make matters worse, the Gunners conceded a goal from a corner, too.
