“You shut your mouth” – Keane ridicules Lisandro Martinez shocking rant
Former Manchester United captain Roy Keane blasted Lisandro Martinez for his stunning post-match statements on Tuesday night.
The Premier League giants’ miserable start to the season continued, as they suffered a 0-2 defeat at the hands of Atletico Madrid in their first real test in the Champions League.
The Red Devils conceded a goal in the opening minute of the game, before allowing another following Leny Yoro’s second-half dismissal.
Nevertheless, whatever happened on the pitch was overshadowed by Lisandro’s astonishing post-match statement.
Roy Keane believes Lisandro Martinez had no right to make these remarks
In his interview with Amazon Prime, Martinez pointed the finger at Man Utd’s Director of Football Jason Wilcox, accusing him of failing to back Michael Carrick by presenting him with a competitive squad.
He also insisted that sacking the head coach wouldn’t solve any issues, as the club’s real problem lies with those at the top.
These words sent shockwaves across the football world, with observers describing it as the most shocking interview conducted by an active Man Utd player probably since Keane’s days.
But while some would have thought Keane would give his blessing to the Argentine defender for speaking his mind, the retired midfielder’s response was largely negative.
While Gary Neville was reciting Lisandro’s statement, Keane was quick to interrupt him, mocking the player for thinking Man Utd had a great 2025/26 campaign.
“He actually thinks we had a fantastic season… When they came third? Wow!” said Keane on the latest episode of The Overlap’s Stick to Football.
“He should have been fined two weeks’ wages just for saying that.”
The former Irish international argued that Martinez is in no position to criticise the hierarchy, as he isn’t considered a senior player and hasn’t been doing his bit on the pitch.
“I don’t see him as a senior player at Man United. I see him as a centre-half who’s making lots of mistakes.”
“He’s had a little rant at international level. He’s played 80 games for Man United. He’s not been there eight, nine years. If you’re making mistakes, you shut your mouth in the dressing room.”
Is Keane too harsh on Martinez?
Keane and Neville certainly have a point when suggesting that Martinez should be producing better individual displays before discussing broader issues.
Nevertheless, we are talking about a World Cup-winning defender who has been a regular starter at the club for years.
Perhaps Bruno Fernandes would have been the ideal candidate to make a statement of such magnitude, or even Carrick himself, who should be aggrieved by the management’s poor transfer market campaign.
However, the fact that someone from the team, regardless of his identity and club achievements, has found the courage to call out the management is a commendable act in itself.
