Xabi Alonso wants reunion with his former star
It looks as though Trent Alexander-Arnold’s time at Real Madrid is coming to an abrupt end.
The Englishman, 28, joined Los Blancos from Liverpool in the summer of 2025. With his contract ticking down ahead of the FIFA Club World Cup kickoff Madrid opted to pay £10m to get him on board a month early.
And ever since he moved to the Spanish capital - under Xabi Alonso - it’s been one calamity after another.
This season Trent has suffered due to the signing of Denzel Drumfries - who appears to be ahead of the ex-Liverpool favourite in Jose Mourinho’s pecking order.
And worse still it looks as though the Special One would actually prefer to use Federico Valverde there too.
Trent Alexander-Arnold linked with Real Madrid exit
Quite where this outcome leaves Alexander-Arnold is anyone’s guess. But the drumbeat over a return to the Premier League is growing louder.
Manchester City have long been linked with a move for the right-back while Liverpool will always crop up as a potential destination.
And while we don’t yet know whether or not Julian Ward will make a move for Alexander-Arnold in January - or beyond - there looks to be interest from Chelsea.
Because trusted Blues reporter Si Phillips claims stories linking Alexander-Arnold to Stamford Bridges have got legs.
Xabi Alonso wants Trent Alexander-Arnold reunion
“Chelsea reportedly have an interest in Real Madrid right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold as Malo Gusto is up for sale,” a report on Caught Offside reads citing Phillips’ reporting.
This leaves Liverpool with a big decision to make. Let’s be frank and state that the club have never managed to replace Trent’s output from right-back.
Conor Bradley and Jeremie Frimpong have been tried there but have failed to step up either through injury or a lack of form.
Ronald Araujo is the latest to be tried in the position - but he’s only on loan and it remains to be seen whether Ward will pay £47m to make the Barcelona man’s deal permanent.
Alexander-Arnold would therefore be a perfect fit. However he will be making a LOT more than the reported £180k per week he was earning at Liverpool.
And with a contract extending to 2031 it will cost the Merseysiders a pretty penny to re-sign the hometown hero from Madrid.
Let’s see how this one plays out. Right now it looks as though Xabi Alonso is gunning for a reunion with his former Real Madrid charge.
