Wiegman says England have plenty to improve on despite first-leg play-off win over Greece
Sarina Wiegman was pleased with England’s composure in their 3-1 win over Greece but admitted there is still plenty to improve ahead of the second leg of their World Cup qualification play-off.
The Lionesses took control of the tie with victory in the first leg, although Wiegman was frustrated by aspects of the performance and the goal her side conceded.
“I think we started well, they started aggressive too but we stayed calm, that’s what I’m most pleased with but a couple of things to work on too,” Wiegman said.
“At moments in the game we were tight, the ball wasn’t moving quick enough.
“Especially when we got the ball in the pockets, high up the pitch, we need to be tighter, more aligned.”
Goals from Georgia Stanway, Maya Le Tissier and Alessia Russo were enough to secure the win of the Lionesses.
But England created enough opportunities to have won by a greater margin, with Wiegman pointing to wastefulness and poor timing in attacking areas.
“With these opportunities we had, we could’ve scored a lot more goals,” she added.
“Sometimes we were offside, so there are some things we need to work on, and I’m not happy with the goal we conceded.”
